SOURCE: 1997 mecury cougar v8 engine. Wont start. It is

Not sure if you got your cougar running or not, but I had a similar problem and it turned out to be my Crank shaft sensor. I replaced it myself, its fairly easy if you are the type that likes to pull stuff apart and fix it. The part cost about $20. you do have to move the ac compressor over but you don't have to remove it makes the job a lot easier. I am still running the 1997 cougar xr7 30th anniversary edition, it has 160000 miles on it and still running strong. I think these are the best cars mercury ever built, i hope they come out with them again in this body style and platform.

SOURCE: Mercury cougar wont start

My first suspicion is the battery connections may be lose and also the battery may now be run down. If you take the terminal connections off and clean them and the terminal posts so that they are shiny clean and charge the battery you can try again. If the car starts, that was the problem. If it doesn't, then look for the starter solenoid and lose connections there and also look toward the starter next. A tech with a volt meter can run independent checks and narrow it down further but having good connections and a charged battery are necessary to get started with the other tests.

SOURCE: 1993 Mercury Cougar XR-7 V-6, Overheating

Your problem could be the coolant temp sensor, or it could be the gauge itself, but something 2 do is if you can get it to a dealer, or a parts store. If you cant get it there, you can get an OBD I scanner and retrieve the code and know why the check engine light is on, but it could be from any of the sensors on the car, would be best to get it scanned.

SOURCE: 99 Mercury Cougar won't start. I turned key to start, has current to relay. Jumped relay, will turn over. Spark to plugs but no fuel to injectors. Fuel pressure in fuel rail. No check engine

Have you checked the automatic shut down relay ?
It powers the injectors from a 20amp fuse number 5.

How do I replace the thermastat in a 1989 cougar ls

Looking around the web, I figure the thermostat is inline with the water pump, before the radiator. You'll have to drain the coolant out of the engine before you remove the water pump or anything associated with it. Maybe someone else who has done this will answer your question better than I can. I have a 87 f150 4x4 wont start with the key has new starter, solonoid switch and new ignition switch but it starts fine when I jump the solonoid

If you are saying that the vehicle will turn over only when jump started and nothing when not connected to another vehicle then I would check the earth connection from battery!

I have a 97 cavalier and we put a new starter on and it wont start it will start if u jump it from the cilanoid is it a bad weir or the swich ??

yes, wire or switch. Trace back from the solinoid until you get the 12 volts the solinoid should get with key in the "start" position.

1987 Ford f150. Sometimes when I turn the key on, ignition lights come on but nothing happens. I can jump the solenoid and it will start. It has a new solenoid. Help?

probably needs a new ignition switch,(NOT the key switch) the ignition switch is located under the dash on the side of the column, its white and about 3 inches long and costs about $15.00 new

Maxima will not do anything but click once when I turn the key.

I have this problem right now also. Here is the deal as I see it. I have a 97 Saturn SC2 automatic (nuuf said!).
Against my intuition I let the guy at Autozone talk me into a battery, though I suspected the solinoid or the starter motor itself.
Put in the new batt and nothing but a single loud click. I took the new battery back and used the refund money to get a new starter.
I put it in and still just a loud click. I have cleaned the terminals and torqued the cable at the batt and starter.Because the solinoid clicks when I turn the key I am asuming (for now) that the ignition switch, neutral saftey switch and the "Startguard" (the little electric key you have to put in for your car to start) is good. In my knowlege, it has to be the main battery cable that runs from the battery to the starter. Next I'm gonna go out there and turn my key to the on position and connect a jumper cable from the battery directly to the starter solinoids high current side to confirm or bust my suspicion of the bad positive (red) battery cable. I will let you know how it goes.

1987 Mercury Cougar won't start

put the test light on the positive of the battery and probe the neg side of the coil while cranking and see if you get a flashing lamp if not either the ignition module is bad or the pick up inside the distributor if the car has a tach if the tach moves while cranking it is most likely the module

Not any spark

Do you have access to a powered test light? If so, I can tell you how to test this problem.

Starter wont engage

The problem is either the starter solinoid (located on fender near battery) or you are not getting power to the "s" terminal on the starter solinoid from the ignition switch. If you follow the positive battery cable from the battery you'll follow it to the solinoid. Remove the small wire from the terminal marked "s" on the solinoid and using a screwdriver jump from "s" terminal (not the wire) to where positive battery cable connects to solinoid. (with battery connected). If starter doesn't do anything the solinoid is bad. If starter cranks then you are not getting voltage from ignition switch through "s" terminal wire.
