1998 f150xl regular cab brakes grab

Replaaed allnew parts front and rear drums shoes holddown kits plus emergency cables brakes are backed off so much that when you take off the tire the drume comes with it now the brakes are spongie and i cant go one mile and they get so hot theystick today the rightrear last night the left rear and right front disk got so hot it burns your hand
i;am at the end of my roap any help would greatfull bob in glace bay novs scotia canada

    Rear right tire will not release. Gets extremely hot to the touch and smells like it's burning. No indication dashboard.

I had a similar problem with the front disc brakes .... had to replace the calipers. In high corrosive conditions the pistons on the calipers can become contaminated and not operate smoothly ... they stick. The same thing can happen to the wheel cylinders on the rear. Try replacing the wheel cylinders on the rear (fairly cheep fix) and if that fixes them then the calipers would be next. Jim

Rear drum brakes


Typical cavalier problem James,
First thing is to get drums off, the sandpaper the brake shoes,you'll see at the top and bottom of each shoe the only part of the shoes being used.I recommend picking up a new set of drums from Auto Zone,they are around $20.00 each. Now the last thing is back off the emergency adjuster about 5 threads, then you can adjust your drum brakes.

Is there a certain way to change rear brake rotors. They seem to be frozen and will not come off. I did not see a set screw in the rotors like some of the new models have.


ok i have been doing the for 22 yrs..heres the prob...inside the rear brake rotors r ur parking brake shoes..there is either a rust lip the built up on the inside of the rotor causing the parking brake shoes to grab the rust lip when u try to remove the rotor..if this is the case u will also need to repalce the rear parking shoes and the parking brake shoe holddown spring kit since it will probably break when u have to pry the rotor off....or u maybe able to de adjust the rear shoes by the self adjuster...look on the back side of the other side of the brake rotor an u should see a over slot just below the control arm...if it there use a brake spoon or straight slot screw driver to de adjust the rear park shoes.move it up or down ..one way will tighten them the other way will loosen them...if ur rotor doesnt move at all take off the rear caliper an hit the back side of the brake rotor to knock it off

1999 F250 4x2 - was stored for 3 months and when I tried to move it - the right rear wheel turns but the left rear wheel won't turn. Took off the brakes and caliper - still won't move. I can move...


Hello, The rear rotor has 2 sets of brakes on it. The other thing is to look for slight movement in the driveshaft when it clunks. Depending on the rearend, some have to have both rear wheels off the ground to turn each side. And of course the trans in Neutral.

With the rear wheel you have an Emergency brake and a drum brake inside the center of the Rotor.
The rear of the brake backing plate has a rubber plug which is covering the Star-wheel adjustment for those drum brakes. You can try to loosen the Star-wheel to disengage the Emergency brake shoes. You can try pulling the brake cables toward the cab, to loosen the cables.

If this does not help, your Emergency brake shoe probably rusted off the brake mount and is jammed inside the drum. The linings fall off the metal like banana skins. I can tell you that if the Emergency brakes are a State safety requirement, you need to consider new rotors because the drum portion is usually trashed with rust.

Emergency brakes not working


Could be several different things that may be causing the parking brake. The sierra uses a simple cable pull system. If the cable becomes loose you will not have emergency/parking brakes. If the cable is tight then the shoe located inside the rear brake drums is worn or broken. If there is no cable coming from the parking/emergency brake pedal inside the cab then it has been either broken out or removed at some point, which is easy to do if taken off-roading.
Keep in mind that only the rear wheels have parking/emergency brakes. Front wheels have none.

It is possible that a Emergency Brake Holddown clip is broken. There are guides built into the Brakeshoe mounts which keep the Brakeshoes from moving out of place.

When the Brakeshoe comes loose it can stay tucked in place in one direction; but when you reverse direction the loose end of the shoe catches the drum portion of the rear Rotor and jams or locks up.

The E brakes are also bad about peeling off the lining from the E brakeshoe. You need the E brake because the Service brakes do not have "Diagonal Safety" braking. There is only 1 main line going to a Tee fitting for the rear Service brakes.

Temporarily, you can gut the E brakes so you can move your Vehicle. Take off the shoes, springs, etc. and then drive to a Brake shop. If you want to fix everything yourself, you will need to TURN the drum portion of the rear Rotor at a minimum. If you do not have tools to remove the rear Calipers, etc. you will need a Flatbed towtruck.

If you have an Autoclub membership, call around for repair prices and coordinate the Towtruck with the Repair facility.

98 Ford Escort, Emergency brake doesn't hold car. Rear brakes okay, adjusted cable to 3 clicks. What am I looking for?


If you have rear rotors that look like a rotor mounted on top of a drum brake, you will have an emergency brake inside the drum portion. The rear brake rotors are not flat like the front rotors for this style.

The E brakes have brake shoes and they have "Star" wheels for adjustment just like the regular drum brake. You really need to take off the rear rotors to inspect the inner drum portion. If you do adjust the E brakes without looking at the drum part, chances are the drum is pitted and rusty and you will be lucky to stop once before the E brake linings are ground off.

The other type of E brake works off the Rotor pads. You will see the brake cable attached to a lever on each wheel. There will be an Equalizing cable connecting both rear wheels with an adjustment point joining the main cable. Although the 3 clicks moves the main cable, to have both rear brakes equally tight you need the Equalizing properly adjusted.

Those are the things you need to look for.

if your in a place to work on it remove back wheel and check the cable they rust when not used for long time pull the lever where the cable connects

You need to replace the brake shoe springs they are weak and allowing the brakes to catch and pull out as the wheel spins like a CD or record player this cause the shoes to lock into the drum and forces them to lock up. A brake spring kit cost $8.00 for a set and it does both sides, it also has the nail and nail springs that hold the shoes against the drum. Check to be sure you don't have micro cracks in the shoes caused by the brakes locking up and heating up. Also does it have rivited shoes or glued on shoes, please rate if this was helpful.

Brakes grab occasionally.


It sounds like you don't have the shoes adjusted properly. If they don't drag on the drums, a little, they will extend too far and bind. Get the back of the truck off the ground, so you can spin the back wheels and adjust the brake shoes until you have some drag, this should solve your problem. Good luck.

The rear drum brakes:
  • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
  • Are a single-anchor type.
  • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
  • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
  • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
  • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .
