Engine turns over but won't start

04 Nissan Sentra It's been cold, I mean really cold and my wife's car has been sitting outside for about 5 days without being driven. Went to start it and it cranks but won't start. It sounds really close but no go. I recently replaced the battery and it's been fine. Radio, etc work. I added heet and still no go. There's about 1/4 tank of gas. ANy suggestions? I have little to no knowledge about cars. Thanks! Mike

A few suggestions...

If the battery terminals are clean (and they probably are, as you just replaced the battery), and the starter sounds like it's cranking, then there are usually two other things to check for. Gas and spark.
You need both to make the engine run. It's a little involved, though for most do-it-your-selfers, it's a-run- of-the-mill process. You have to see that fuel is getting to the cylinders by disconnecting a gas line and very briefly, repeat, very briefly, crank the engine. If any gas spurts out, you're getting gas to the cylinder. If not, there's a problem with the fuel system. Be sure there is no spark or open flame anywhere nearby. Take the car in to a shop.

The other most likely possibility is that your cylinders are getting no spark. You have to disconnect a spark plug wire and see if you are getting a spark. This is a little more involved. Get a fix-it manual for the in-depth procedure. When checking for a spark, make sure there is no open fuel lines around!

2001 Nissan sentra gxe starts when engine is cold, rough start when engine is warm. What do I have to fix?

When a hot engine is hard to start, most of the causes are fuel related problems. Fuel cannot circulate well due to the way in which vapor blocks it.

If the resistor bypass doesn't solve it, another remedy could be a plug-in type engine block heater- I mean plug into household current. It keeps the engine coolant warm in the block. Every other car here in Montana uses one-works great for those below zero nights. When the wife pulls into work, just run an extension line and keep the car plugged in till time to go. Other than that, IDK, sounds like you've covered it pretty well as far as solutions.

My 04 Nissan sentra starts up fine. Then about 5 minutes down the road when I stop, it won't accelerate again until I turn the car off for a minute and restart. If I let off the gas too much it stops...

Take your car to a local parts store, they will read the engine code for you for free. They will also offer possible actions  fix it and parts it will take. Be careful out there.

89 Nissan Sentra making a trrrrrr noise

sounds like a case of closing the horse after the barn ran away...Pretty good chance that you have lost an engine bearing (yes, that means it's new engine time)
To avoid this in the future regard your oil light as a "you just blew your engine" light. Check your oil at least every two weeks, and this will never happen again (not for lack of oil anyway!!!)

Car turns over but won't start

one thing you need to remember.... as it gets colder (that's not cold yet) the battery gets less efficient as the demand for more power increases with the starter. were you able to start it by boosting it.... also what weight motor oil is in it. 30 to 50 weight oil turns to the consistency of molasses in cold weather.

Fast iddle speed when engine is cold.

This is acting normally then...

I guess it really depends on how cold it gets outside as well as how high the RPM's go...
If your RPM's are above 3500 RPM's then I do suspect something is wrong, and further
info is needed...

These vehicles had issues with fuel pressure bleeding down when they sit for a period of time (like overnight). Nissan has issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) on this issue.

There is a check valve in the fuel pump assembly that holds fuel in the fuel line so that fuel is readily available to the engine. This valve fails and allows that fuel to slowly drain back to the tank. The reason you have to crank the engine for a long period of time is that the fuel has to be pumped from the tank all the way to the engine- may take 10 seconds or more.

Once you start the vehicle, fuel is available and since the drain back to the tank is slow, restarting after even a few hours will be much easier.

The repair involves replacing the fuel pump "module" assembly (it's a service kit that contains the check valve mentioned earlier). The fuel pump assembly is removed from the tank and disassembled and reassembled with several new parts. This is a dealer-only repair. Depending on your level of expertise, you may be able to perform the repair yourself, but will have to buy the parts from the dealer.

Ait sensor for 2003 nissan sentra 1.8

if it cranks for a longer time than normal and than it starts, you my friend need a new fuel pump rebuild kit/pressure regulator inside the gas tank. what happens is that the fuel will go back into the gas tank instead of staying in the fuel line and everytime you turn the key, the pump has to pump fuel all the way to the injectors again to get the car started. So, long crank and than start means fuel pump rebuild kit/pressure regulator in tank.
