1989 z24 dies when stopped and transmission acts up a little?
I bought this z24 for 375 I put a new air filter, oil filter fuel filter, changed the oil and transmission fluid and filter. Me and my dad found a few vacuum lines that were broken, we put electrical tape around them it seems to hold, but recently we found one that might lead to the transmission, we dont know. now for the problems-car dies when i stop unless i put it into nuetral, idle goes down a bit when i put my lights on, when i get out of my car after driving for about 10 miles i hear this really wierd sound, found out at the gas station that it the gas tanks leaking compressed air. the transmission doesnt kick in to 2nd and 3rd gear until 5000 rpm, and when i slow down it kicks into hard. I also use about quarter tank of gas only going about 25 miles- really bad!!! any one have ideas? i think maybe fuel pressure regulater, or AIC valve, egr valve?

Transmission torque converter solenoid. Try disconnecting and see if the problem stops. You can leave disconnected, but you will have a significant drop in fuel mileage. Not hard to replace if that is what the problem is.

if dies immediately when u put it in drive then whats happening is the torque convertor on transmission is lock and need to unplug the electric connector on the transmission cause that's all it controls, if dies in park u most likely its Idle air control valve on your throttle body, if it does it when fully warm ur injectors cause that .... just try to clean idle air control valve first and unplug transmission connector first u should be running better
I would start with a good healthy tune up since the car has sat. Change plugs, wires, oil,oil filter, air filter, PCV valve, FUEL FILTER, and as old as it is (and if you plan on keeping it) change trans fluid & filter. This will give you a good "ground zero" point for reliability,
the pcm may have a cracked board, i had an 88 cavalier z24 with the same problem, replced the ecu and it ran fine, the problem is that the boards inside the pcm crack and lose connection, the next time it acts up open the glove box and try tapping on the pcm, if the car responds at all, the pcm is bad
replace all vac lines first , then you need to get someone to run fuel pump pressure test to be sure you are getting proper fuel pressure , then take o propane torch ( not lit of course and go around all vac lines and intake with motor running and see if motor speeds up when you are holding it next to any suspected vac leak the tranny in this mod shifts off electric solenoids check to be sure all battery connections are clean and that i wire that ground the motor off the battery is in good condition and clean and tight , however the main care should be to vacuum and fuel pressure
