You're right. the autolocking hubs are pretty crappy especially when old. you can replace them with manual locking hubs from WARN industries.

Can I bypass the vacuum pump on my 1997 chevy blazer 4 wheel drive and put a cable on the other cable to ingage the front wheels

Probably not. These have two different units to lock and unlock 4wd. One locks the front diff, while the other locks the transfer case.

1997 chevy 1500 4x4 not working, was in 4 wheel drive and the light on the floor was on all 4wheel was ingaged and the light went off and the two rear wheels begain to spin I disingaged it and tryed...

START WITH THE ACTUATOR. THIS LOCK IT INTO FOUR WHEEL DRIVE. IT SHOULD BE ON THE FRONT AXLE AND HAVE A COUPLE WIRES GOING TO IT. FIRST CHECK THE CONECTONS AND GO FROM THERE.

No light on 4wheel dr control

There are a few things that would cause this problem.
The first and most common would be the switch itself is bad. the next would be a bad 4wheel drive encoder motor, this is the motor on the transfer case that is used to operate the 4wheel drive. The last would be the 4 wheel drive module.
You will need to do some testing, if the four wheel drive is working and goes in and out of 4 wheel drive then i would say it the switch. if it does not work correctly it may still be the switch or one of the components i listed above.I have enclosed a wiring diagram, you will need to do some testing to check system, first make sure all fuses are good. the fuses that operate the 4wd are listed on diagram, it will also tell you the location of each part. you will need to test front axle actuator and selector motor and switch, you will need a test light and a meter. hope this is helpful, good day.4_26_2012_10_13_14_pm.gif

Won,t shift transfer case into 4wheel drive

Is the truck on the fly 4X4 push button or is there a lever on the floor you pull into 4 wheel drive? Located on the back of the transfer case not hard to change few bolts and a wire harness. Does the front drive shaft turn when you put it in 4x4 and the front wheels won't ingage? If so then its not your transfer case its the actulator on the front axle at the gear hub or pumpkin it will have two 10mm bolts and a black plastic cover if so remove cover and spray actulator shaft with wd-40.

I have the same problems but found the problem. Put a vacuum pump on the hub and see if there is any. I have one that has 30 inches of vacuum and one with zero. The only solution I found was to buy a used one from a salvage yard. The hand vacuum pump is only $40 but you will save over a $1000 doing this.

4 wheel drive stopped working

the light is on.........let's see, where you having problems with clunking noises in the front, now or before when or not in 4 wheel drive? If so sounds like cv/axle shats/joints. Last time you used 4 wheel, was there a big clunk, just once? Is there an ocasional clunk when going over bumps? If so, sounds like Ujoint. I don't belive chevys use vaccum for 4 wheel drives systems at all.

there is an solenoid in the 4 wheel drive that allows the ingage dis ingage of that system that might be defective due to low voltage or just worn out. even though your shifting the stick this solenoid might be causing the problem. take it to a shop and have a tech inspect it.
