2001 durango shifters been a bit stangle lately didn't feel like it was going in kept slipping out by itself. Then this morning went to leave and it's stuck in park wondering if this could be the problem

We have the exact same problem with another 2002 Durango. Shop was not able to duplicate it, thus, they could not fix it. It still happens occasionally. One Dodge mechanic was familiar with it and told us to just bang on the side of the steering wheel a few times, I presume to "loosen it up", and that has worked until today. Maybe it is the cold, but we could not get it out of park today, no matter what we tried.

Not sure that this is the solution, but I found a work around on my Durango. If you take off the cover on the shifter there is a lever (button) that you can dislodge and the vehicle will release out of park. After I did this a couple of times, I haven't had the issue happen again.

Pull the rubber / leather boot that is around the shift lever from the steering column and slide it up the shift lever. Look inside and try to shift the transmission out of park. You will see the lever that is stopping the shifter from moving. Spray that lever with WD40 and push it with your finger while the car is started. It should pop out of the shifters way allowing it to operate normally. Turn off the engine and start it again a few times and it should work fine. Replace the rubber / leather boot and smile because you just saved yourself $150 - $200 that the dealer would charge towing.

Thank you! wouldn't shift-When the tow truck showed up, I told the driver and he popped off the cover at the base of the shifting arm and popped he button and I can shift again! The dealer said that the button didn't exist on this make-LOL-I guess he really needs the money-Can only imagine what he would have charged-Thanks again!

I have a Durango of the same year. The problem is the shift cable. It will bind from time to time. Like any cable of that sort, the inside relies on lubrication, although it can not be lubricated, it comes lubed up from the factory. Early into the problem, it will free up when the vehicle warms up, because the lubricant loosens up.
In short, if you replace the shift cable your problem will be solved.

Why wont my key turn on 2002 chevy impala I need a diagram of swich

If the steering wheel is lock, try holding the steering wheel right in the middle while you jiggle the key, the sweet spot is the mid point, now i get the steering wheel is locked but it still moves a little bit, and press the brake pedal,at the same time, 1=transmission in park. 2=steering wheel in mid point,.3=depressed brake pedal 4=wriggle the key all the way back then go far as wiring, bypass well i dont wanna teach nobody how to steal a car, gm its got wiring schematics on line.

Changed my brake switch out and now my 2002 dodge durango wont crank doesn't even turn over

For safety reasons, in order to be able to start cranking your engine, you are required to depress the brake pedal. The reason of your problem can be either that your brake switch's connector isn't connected properly or you have forgotten to move the "release lever" on the back of the switch after installing it.

Car wont shift out park

Wiggle your steering wheel back and forth until the shifter moves. Make sure key is on and brake is depressed. If you park on a hill you should set your parking brake before releasing brake pedal so the weight of your car is sitting on that and not your transmission.

99 honda accord won't shift out of park

Check your brake light function. If that is at fault then your brake light switch may be faulty. If your brake lights are fine then you may have a faulty shift lock solenoid. Some Japanese models of that era have a button or key slot near to the shift lever. If you depress that then it should manually release the lock and allow you to move through the gears, until you move back to 'P' position at which point it will lock again.

2002 dodge durango wont shift out of park

Put your foot on the brakes and have someone see if you have brake lights. This has a shift interlock that uses the brake lights to complete the circuit that unlocks the shifter from park. You can bypass this saftey feature by applying brake, engine off key off and moving shifter to neutral then starting the engine Dont forget to fix your brake lights !!

Steering wheel not locked key will not turn cannot take car out of park to neutral etc. battery charged power windows will not go up brake lights stay on had to disconnect battery so it would not drain.

Look under the dash, on the brake pedal arm. There are one or two switches that activate brake lights and/or shift unlock. Check for loose mounting nut or a missing rubber nubber. Is the brake pedal coming all the way back up? Look on the floor for something not usually found there. These switches are adjustable and it may be as simple as adjusting them. Have a helper look for brake lights on and shift lever unlocked while you push and release the switches with your finger. Depress the brake pedal to get it out of the way. Remember to set the park brake first. Could just be a bad switch or loose connector. Check fuses and the bulbs. Is shifter fully in Park?

This may not solve all your issues, but it'll get you started.

Ignition switch will not turn on. Battery is good. Steering wheel is locked, What should we do?

Quite often that will happen when vehicle parked with wheels turned, and/or vehicle on a slope, so try to avoid that in future. If nothing else, when parked on a slope, stop, keep foot on brake pedal, apply parking brake, put transmission in neutral, then take foot off brake pedal and wait for parking brake to stop vehicle rolling, then shift it into park. When leaving, put foot on brake pedal, shift to drive or reverse whatever direction your going, then release parking brake. Sounds like a lot to remember but you won't have to pull hard on shifter as before, and it could save a lot of money on transmission repairs down the road. Always try to park with wheels straight as well.
Now, with that said, if you parked with wheels turned, try hard to turn steering wheel in same direction wheels are turning, just slightly, as you try to turn key. Sometimes a quick yank in that direction will do it. Also make sure shifter is all the way in park before you try it. If your on a slope try rocking vehicle slightly up slope as you push/pull shift lever in to park and try to turn key at same time. If no luck, try pushing brake pedal real hard and try to turn key. Let me know how it goes.

1992 toyota camry v6 auto. can't move shifter. car starts and ste

Car must be on and brake pedal depressed to shift. If you have no brake lights then the car doesn't know the pedal is depressed and will not shift out of park. This car has an interlock overide on the shifter console, push it and it will come out of Park. You will need a brake light switch tho.
