Question about 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

Starter runs but does not engage.

My 2000 Cavalier has been having problems starting. Now it will not turn over the starter motor runs but that is it. I plan on replacing the starter, could their be a reason why this has happened, for example my battery is ready to be replaced would a weak battery put stress on the starter?

If the starter motor is running, but not engadging the engine you have a faulty bendix drive, which is what makes the gear in the starter engadge to the flywheel, then retract after the starter has been disengadged. It may just be in the celenoid, which is the small round cyllender on the side of your starter that engadges the bendix. If you remove the starter and bring it to an autozone or advance auto they can test it for you to be sure for free. You will also need to bring the old starter to them as a core, so if you bring it to them before purchasing the new one, they can test it and the core charge will be paid for when you purchase the new one.
Good luck!

I have a 2000 toyota celica gts and it wont start or turn over the starter will make like a whinning sound but its not trying to crank the engine maybe its the starter but just in case its not anybody have...

Likely either the starter or solenoid. Solenoid is a combination of relay and actuator, pushing the starter's gear into engagement with your flywheel.

Starter motor turns but wont engage

A lot of times and on most vehicles, when the Starter turns over but will not engage, that means the Bendix inside the starter is not pushing the starter gear out to engage in starting your engine. Best solution would be to just simply replace the starter. Sometimes you can have the starter rebuilt, but in most cases the fasted and simplest way is to replace it. Hope this helps

My 2000 chev. cavalier got hot, then lost power. now it wont start, when you turn the ignition it makes a spinning sound

Is the engine turning over or just the starter spinning? If the engine is not turning over then the starter bendix is not kicking the starter in. You can try tapping on it with a hammer to see if it will engage, but you will need to replace the starter if that is the cause.
Why did the car overheat? That problem will need to repaired after you get it started. Hopefully no internal damage was done.

2000 passat stopped running/try to start car, sounds like bendix is engaging but starter is not turning. took starter to parts store, starter tested ok. what could it be?

check the sound again when you start. according to the year of your car, you may have a broken timing belt. it will sound very fast like a pendix of your starter not engage

Have bought new battery for 2000 hyundai sonata, still wont crank engine. What could be the problem?

I assume your motor crankshaft is not 'seized' or otherwise locked up.

Check your battery terminals are clean and firmly attached,
Check battery ground connection is securely connected to the chassis and the motor/chassis ground connection is intact.
Check for 'click' sound as starter solenoid is engaged when Ignition sw set to 'start' position.
If no noise from starter motor, and +12v applied to the starter engage solenoid terminal, then the starter motor may be faulty.

Chevy cavalier will not start. Key to Aux will get power. Key forward will not get anything.

I guess this vehicle is automatic and if so The chances are the inhibitor switch is faulty. This is the switch that tells the car that it is in Park or neutraland therefore ok to engage starter motor. You can some times wiggle the shift stick in and out of park whilst holding key forward, should the starter engage or try to engage then you will know this is the fault and may need either replacement or adjustment.

Starter replacement......needs to know how many cylinders my cars has

The starter has no cylinders. it is an electric motor powered from the battery and ignition system.
The chevy cavalier has a 4 cylinder engine though.
