Do a search for an expert on TDI's. The procedure for checking the transmission fluid would start with getting the Transmission temperature to the manufaturers specifications. The only way to know this is with a Vag-com or a Scan gauge II. At the correct temp, the fluid should be level with the bottom of the hole when you remove the top hex bolt on the transmission.
Thats most retarded thing Ive heard of. So thats German engineering? Sounds more like Retarded engineering!!!! I think this is my first and last time with VW or any German POS!! Solution, sell that POS back to the Germans...

Your 2001 VW Jetta is likely equipped with a "sealed" transmission unit. There is no dipstick that you can use to measure the level of transmission fluid in sealed transmissions. Unfortunately, it's a dealer item that needs to be addressed by a qualified mechanic or at a VW dealer.
I suggest only using power steering fluid in the power steering system in VW Jetta's. I tried using trans. fluid before and it made the pump wine constantly especially when cold and I had to purge the system and refill it with power steering fluid to get it to stop.
THE 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION At the bottom of the automatic gearbox (tiptronic) you will find one threaded plug on below surface, (follow red arrow in the picture below). This is for emptying.
The oil level threaded plug is placed on the car front lateral automatic gearbox surface, (follow yellow arrow in the picture below).
The filling oil plug is placed on the upper automatic gearbox surface, (follow green arrow in the picture below).
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) checking: 1. Requirements for check: 1.1. Vehicle standing on level surface. 1.2. Transmission must not be in fail-safe mode. 1.3. Shift lever in "P" position, parking brake applied. 1.4. Engine idling. 1.5. Air Conditioner and heater OFF. 1.6. ATF temperature must not exceed 104 Fahrenheit degree (40 Celsius degree) at start of test. 1.7. Automatic gearbox oil capacity: 2,5 liter. Only ATF with VW designation may be used. Do not use any lubricant additives. 1.8. Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF - part number: VW G 052 990 A2 1.9. An ATF level check when transmission oil temperature is too low results in overfilling, when too high results in underfilling. 2. CAUTION: Too much or too little ATF will affect the operation of the transmission. The ATF level must be checked at regular intervals.
There is a small allen head plug on the bottom of transmission (6 mm).This where you you check the fluid .The transmission has to be at least 130 f and the engine idling in park on level ground.Fluid should drip from the hole if trans is full and you must use the factory vw fluid ( @ 25.00 quart) to fill.There is a 10 mm allen head plug on the top of transmission near the linkage that is the fill point.Good luck.These plugs strip out very easily , use the correct size and a high quality tool.
Most 1995-on VW models don't have a transmission fluid dipstick for
checking the transmission fluid level. To fill and check the level of
the VW automatic transmission fluid you have to remove a plug on the
side or bottom (location depends on model and if you have an automatic vs. manual transmission) of the transmission drain
pan. The factory manual refers the expensive VAG 1924 special tool for
pumping the VW automatic transmission fluid into the oil pan.
The average consumer cannot check transmission fluid in the 2000 VW
jetta. You must go to a dealership for this service. The problematic
transmissions are factory sealed and touted to be 'maintenance free'
with the fluid port capped by the manufacturer. The 2000 Jettas (as
well as other model years) are notorious for early transmission
replacement. Do not expect the VW corp to take care of any transmission
issues unless you force them to.
VW didn't put a "dipstick" on the trans for whatever reason. You technically have to use the VW Vag-Com scanner to properly check the trans fluid level as VW says it has to be checked at a specific temperature. But there is a "shade-tree" workaround. Start the car and leave the engine running the throughout the entire procedure. You have to get the trans fluid warm-a little under normal operating temp. 95F-104F is what you want-you can attain this after letting the car idle for 8 or so minutes. Continuing, leave the trans in park, and make sure you are on as level of a surface as possible. Then loosen the allen plug on the bottom of the trans pan. You will then see another plug. Remove this plug. Fluid should just trickle out of the hole if it is at the proper level. If it trickles out, you are good. If it doesn't you need to add fluid. Add VW spec ATF through the fill port.The fill port on the top front of the trans is capped off by a red cap and is very visible. Very carefully pry the cap off and then wiggle the plug out. I'd highly suggest having a spare red cap on hand-VW dealer has them. Then you can pour fluid into the trans. Add a little bit at at time, and all the while watching for the fluid to tricke out of the trans plug hole. When it trickles out, replace the inner plug and then the outer plug. That's it. Recheck after driving the car for a few miles. FYI- A flud and filter swap on the the VW auto trans takes 3 liters, so keep that in perspective. I hope this helps you out.
