The first thing to check for is a tune up, if you haven't already. Plugs and wires, and if it is still acting up, check the coil, make sure it's getting spark. If you have spark to the plug, then go with a compression test.
Good luck!

Determine what cylinder is misfiring and do a compression test on that cylinder. Compare it with a cylinder that is not misfiring. You should have no more than 20% difference between the good cylinder and the bad cylinder. If it is low on compression, suspect a burn valve or bad valve seat... and it will require cylinder head repair. If it is good on compression, then look for a faulty injector or some other reason for the misfire on the dead cylinder.

Cylinder misfire in ford escort 97

Rubbish. Find out whether the misfire is due to low compression or a bad coil pack. Low compression would be the most expensive since an overhaul would be needed. If a coil pack is bad, it's a simple fix and not too bad on the pocket book

Did you get the wire on in the right spot? The coil should be marked for which cylinders they go to.
