2005 Grand caravan sputters at idle...random mis-fires. Wondering if coil assembly is a "likely suspect"?

what did you get out of the tank? was it clear to yellowish? does it smell like gas or diesel? did it settle into two layers (like oil and water)?

DOES THIS UNIT HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. REMOVE AIR FILTER, IS IT BADLY PLUGGED? I LIKE TO SPRAY A SMALL AMOUNT OF EITHER IN THE INTAKE. IF IT SPUTTERS GENERALLY YOU HAVE SPARK. OR YOU CAN GET A SPARK TESTER AT YOUR LOCAL PARTS HOUSE AND PUT IT INLINE OF EACH PLUG AND TEST FOR SPARK AT EACH CYLINDER. NEXT DO YOU HAVE FUEL? CHECK ALL FUSES. ESPECIALLY THE FUEL PUMP FUSE. CHECK FOR POWER AT FUSES. IF ALL GOOD THERE WHEN KEY IS TURNED ON (INITIAL KEY ON) DOES THE FEUL PUMP TURN ON) IF GOOD THERE I WOULD REPLACE THE FUEL FILTER IF IT HASENT BEEN DONE IN LONG TIME, THEN CYCLE THE KEY IN 1 MINUTE INCREMENT S SEVERAL TIMES TO PRIME SYSTEM SEE IF UNIT STARTS. DID IT SPUTTER TO A STOP OR COMPLETE INSTANT SHUT DOWN?

Cavalier sputters

  • What was the reason for changing the plugs, wires, fuel filter and fuel pump ?
  • Was it running good before ?
  • Could be crossed spark plug wires, check to see if they are going to the right plugs
  • Check to see if fuel filter is on the right way
  • Check to see what your fuel pressure is and if it's within specs

First check for spark at any of the sparkplugs,if you have spark next check fuel pump fuse and relay then check fuel pressure.Turn ignition switch on and listen for pump it should come on for 2 seconds then shut off.

Dash lights flicker i dont kno what it could be any awnsers? and my car likes to sputter like its not getting gas could it be bad plugs?>???????

Dash lights flickering could be that your fuse is going bad or wire connection. The sputtering could be a fuel filter or fuel pump. Yes I would check the plugs and wires first.

Van Sputters And Loses All Power When I Accelerate

Internal combustion engines requires 3 things... fuel, air, and spark. You do not have enough of one or more of these. If the wires and plugs are old, change them.  Air filter, same thing.  Fuel filter can also clog up with stuff after awhile. When you take a look at the air filter check where the air comes from.  It is possible a little critter has built a home and blocked the air flow (rare, but, it has happened).

Check the crank sensor probably when you replaced the timing belt you could have either not put the crank signal ring in correctly or damaged the crank sensor.

Sputtering at midrange rpm somtimes

Perhaps I'm too late and too long winded! But to answer your question about the fuel pump, yes the pump failure mode could be gradual. But as for your "sputtering" engine the root cause could be related to the fuel or ignition system. For clarification I have a few questions. (1) Realizing this may be an intermitent problem, can you make the engine sputter if you rev the engine with tranmission in park? If yes, this reduces the probability of the sputter being ignition related. (2) When you do rev the engine do you get full rpm's (> 2000rpm) or does it seem choked/limited? If no, your suspisions maybe correct and your engine could have a fuel system problem. (3) Or possibly the sputter only occurs/worsens when the engine is loaded? You can sufficiently load the engine by applying the park, service brake pedal, shifting the transmission into drive, and then slowly applying moderate accelerator pedal. It shouldn't take more than 25 to 50% of accelerator application to safely load the engine.

Two possible solutions: If the engine sputters with the transmission in park or you just don't trust the fuel pump you might want to check the fuel filter first before condeming the pump. The alcohol content in fuel could have cleared enough debris to plug your 3 month old fuel filter. You should be able to blow through the filter without much effort. When the fuel filter is clogged it will fatigue the pump and can lead to failure. It could also be poor fuel quality though. (2) If the engine sputters loaded check the ignition coils and module. One way to check a coil is to disconnect a plug wire set before trying to duplicate the problem. If the engine sputters worsens with a wire set disconnected that coil is okay. You will find the culprit when the sputter doesn't change with a plug wire set dis connected.
