GAS GAUGE is stuck on empty. fuel warning light is on CEL is on and cruise is flashing

went back to the dealership and talked to the service manager and let us know that we didn't have to replace the whole fuel pump kit for the second sensor because it was available as a separate item. we bought both sensors - one that sits on the fuel pump itself and the other one is on the other side of the tank. subaru recommends that both sensors be replaced even if only one has gone bad. doesn't make sense but did it just to make sure. the fuel tank is shaped like a horseshoe over the drive shaft. to replace these parts we had to pull out the back seat which we only had to pull up on the left and right front corners, no bolts had to be removed. we then folded over the layer of material covering the access points. there were two black plates with four screws each that we removed to get to the two sensors. the fuel pump is on the passengers side. you have to remove the whole fuel pump in order to replace its sensor. fyi the fuel pump is big and holds a lot of gas so be ready for any gas spills. the other sensor has eight bolts and comes out easy but be sure to keep the metal ring from the old sensor to use on the new sensor. you can pop it off with a screw driver. sounds like a lot of work but it only took us an hour for the whole project and it saved us about $230 in labor.

Sorry no the sending unit in your tank is bad replace it. If you are sure of amount of as you have and you know your average MPG you could wait till your tank is low so as not to waste much gas Give yourself a 3MPG reduction for error accountability.

hi it can either be two things, 1st being the fuel gauge itself in the dash it maybe sticking or need recalibrated, and second it maybe the sender itself which it located on the fuelpump in the tank

this can be several problems combined as the flashing cruise light is used for other faults such as p1088/1090 which is a tgv sensor. as for the fuel lever sender there are 2 just behind the rear seats in the cargo area. remove the cargo storage units they clip in place so be gentle when pulling them up and start from the hatch end. the carpet on the rear seats has a strip that clips into the rear most section of the storage units this just prys straight up again take it easy its plastic. now you can access the covers for the 2 fuel sending units on either side of the fuel tank. they both use a resistior strip which is simple to clean and easy to test with a multi-meter. here is a link for the service manual to give you all the info you will need for testing this or any other issues you may have http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E6NYF6FJ
