How to change the fan belt in my 1988 BMW 735i

The alternator and water pump share the same belt. You will have to remove all three as the fan/alternator belt is in the back. The alternator and AC compressor both have bolts which you need to loosen to get them to swing forward and release tension. Make sure you rotate onlt the backside bolts. The frontside bolts on the brackets have teeth which are used to increase tension. If you turn those, you will strip the brackets and have to buy new ones. The link below gives you the proper sizes.

Hi i am struggling to install bmw 316 fanbelt?

it is hard to change a fan belt, coz you need to take off the radiator first to have a better view on the belt. then take off the fan it self then you need to loose all the belt tensioners there's 3 of them.

318isM44 Fan Belt Replacement

First you need to remove the fan (use a 32mm wrench and a hammer to break the nut loose, its reverse threads!!!) After that locate the tensioner. Its the smaller one inbetween the crank pulley and the power steering pump. Now if theres a spot on the pulley for a 16mm socket, thats where you will turn the pulley clockwise to loosen the belt. If not, remove the dust cover on the pulley. It maybe a Torx screw (30 or 40 size). 1f44cf2.png

I am in the process of changinging a thermostat and need to know how to remove the fan. I removed the 4 screws to the pulley but the fan would not come off. please help

what year is it?
if it's an E36 it should have a viscous coupling.
you need a very large spanner or large cresent, [cant remember size] put the pulley & belt back on & tighten. the put the spanner or cresent on the large nut behind the viscous coupling & with a hammer give the spanner a quick hard wack clockwise to loosen. usually one or two decent hits free it enough to undo by hand. then put back together opposite directions. hope this helps.
