Question about 1998 Ford Ranger SuperCab

1998 ford ranger 4x4 Front Axle hubs will not engage

I have a 98 Ranger 4X4. The front hubs will no longer engage, the transfer case is engageing, and the front axles still turn, but the wheels do not. I have had it at the dealer, and they could not fix it. I am pretty sure that it is a vacume problem, as this is how the hubs lock. I just can't get any detailed diagrams / schematics for this. I figured I would just install some manually locking hub kit, but they can't even tell me what kind of front end I have, weather it's 24, 27, or 30 spline axle, etc.....CAn you guys help??

I have the same issue with a 98 Mazda B4000 (same rig) light comes on and you can hear the axle engage but the front wheels do not turn.

I found a website that explaned that you can remove the hub and dust cover, inside is a spring which holds the hub out, removing this spring and replacing the rubber dust cover and hub will lock your front hubs in continious. as is done on later models, This has worked for my 98 4wd

4WD wont engage on my 1988 Ford Ranger Automatic Transmission

Some of the hubs on those are vacume actuated. Ck for broken lines under hood and trace down to the hub area behind the brakes. Hubs are also common on those too. When in 4x4 see if the front frive shaft can be turned by hand after driving slowly in 4x4. If so, then the module and the electric motor on the transfer case are common too. Not a great system for reliability. Most likely the transfer case motor. If you lose the radio setting every time you shut off the truck, possibly the circuit for the clock memory is the same one as the 4x4 sensor or control. Could be as simple as a fuse. Not an easy one.

1992 Ford Ranger 4.0L; I push the 4x4 button, as you drive there is a bang sound from the front end, sounds like the drivers side where the noise is coming from, Under no load not so noticeable. Universals...

Is the 4x4 an Auto Engage? If not you must be STOPPED and in NEUTRAL to activate your 4x4. Being a 1992 Ranger I am going to guess it is NOT Auto Engage, therefore you must be stopped and in neutral.

Hope this helps.

Not a problem as much as an answer. Are both wheels rear wheels engaged at all times on my 4x4 87 ranger?

this is a rear wheel drive vehicle and as such the rear wheels are always engaged.when in 4 wheel drive the transfer case in gages and the front differential connects and is engaged.unless the 4 wheel drive is engaged the transfer case just free wheels.

I have a 1998 Ford Ranger 4X4. The 4X4is not working. The light on the dash is lite up and the front axile to the front differential is in gaged but the front wheels spin freel like they are not getting...

If you are seeing the front drive shaft turn,Then it is in four wheel drive,
Your truck has automatic lock in hubs,The most common problem with Rangers is that the lock in hubs get worn and wont keep the axle engaged to the wheel,
If you go to Auto zone they have new lock in hubs for around $50.00
Or you could up grade and get hubs that you manually turn and lock in.
