my dial for my 4 wheel drive wont light up

I have the same problem. I just bought a used 04 TrailBlazer Ext LS. I was trying to see whether it was better to use the A4WD or 4HI in the snow were having. It seemed like only the rear wheels were powered in 4HI, so I went back to A4WD and stopped at the grocery store. When I came back and started the car, there were no lights on the drive selector and only the 'Sevice 4WD' light was on.

    I have a 04 TrailBlazer Ext LS. I can't get back into 2wd able to go from A4WD or 4HI ????

My 2004's 4wd just went out about an hour ago. I have no lights on the selector as well. There is probably no solution other that having it serviced. They really should make these automobiles better, this is something that should not going out so early.

I had the same problem about 2 months ago and now its fixed. Heres what I did. Removed the transfer case 4wd motor. (I have many yrs experience in the automotive field.) Disassembled it and found nothing wrong with the motor itself. There is, however a sensor under the plastic spacer/gasket that tells the computer what position the motor is is and this appeared to be defective when I checked the resistence with a meter. After lots of research online, I found that other mechanics agreed that this is the common cause for loss of 4wd in 2002 trailblazers. I was able to purchase the sensor at "" for $64.66 plus shipping and install it myself. I was informed that I may need to then take it to a dealer to have the computer re-programmed to make it work. After installing the sensor and motor back on the vehicle I still did not have the 4wd light as expected. But just out of curiosity I decided to disconnect the neg term on the battery for a few mins and re-connect it to see if the computer would "re-boot" like a home computer and that worked!!!! So before you do anything crazy like taking your vehicle to the dealer, try the re-boot procedure. If that doesn't work find any garage that can check the vehicles diagnostic fault codes. There are at least 2 fault codes that pertain to the 4wd. Chances are the sensor is the cause of this problem and not the motor itself. Unless the seal on the motor fails or it shorts out it will probably outlast the vehicle since it only spins for a few seconds every winter. I hope this info helps someone with the same problem.

This is almost always caused by the electric motor that engages the 4 wheel drive, it is located on the transfer case.

Starter runs but does not engage.

If the starter motor is running, but not engadging the engine you have a faulty bendix drive, which is what makes the gear in the starter engadge to the flywheel, then retract after the starter has been disengadged. It may just be in the celenoid, which is the small round cyllender on the side of your starter that engadges the bendix. If you remove the starter and bring it to an autozone or advance auto they can test it for you to be sure for free. You will also need to bring the old starter to them as a core, so if you bring it to them before purchasing the new one, they can test it and the core charge will be paid for when you purchase the new one.
Good luck!
