Question about 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer
I had the same problem about 2 months ago and now its fixed. Heres what I did. Removed the transfer case 4wd motor. (I have many yrs experience in the automotive field.) Disassembled it and found nothing wrong with the motor itself. There is, however a sensor under the plastic spacer/gasket that tells the computer what position the motor is is and this appeared to be defective when I checked the resistence with a meter. After lots of research online, I found that other mechanics agreed that this is the common cause for loss of 4wd in 2002 trailblazers. I was able to purchase the sensor at "onlyfactoryparts.com" for $64.66 plus shipping and install it myself. I was informed that I may need to then take it to a dealer to have the computer re-programmed to make it work. After installing the sensor and motor back on the vehicle I still did not have the 4wd light as expected. But just out of curiosity I decided to disconnect the neg term on the battery for a few mins and re-connect it to see if the computer would "re-boot" like a home computer and that worked!!!! So before you do anything crazy like taking your vehicle to the dealer, try the re-boot procedure. If that doesn't work find any garage that can check the vehicles diagnostic fault codes. There are at least 2 fault codes that pertain to the 4wd. Chances are the sensor is the cause of this problem and not the motor itself. Unless the seal on the motor fails or it shorts out it will probably outlast the vehicle since it only spins for a few seconds every winter. I hope this info helps someone with the same problem.

This is almost always caused by the electric motor that engages the 4 wheel drive, it is located on the transfer case.
