I have a 98 Chevy K1500 Pickup. Both handles on the driver's door broke yesterday. Was able to get the door open to replace them but when I shut the door to test the operation of them the door would not open with either handle.

Re: Stuck door latch 98 K1500
Never shut the door to test and always remove ign key as sometimes door lock automaticly,as to why doors will not open did you refit the connection from handle to the lock little metal rod with a plastic clip to hold it on ??assuming it has one as i have never seen a chevrolet only an astro van here in spain .to test without shutting door use a screwdriver to close the mechanism .sorry i couldnt be more helpful

A mechanics worst nightmare. You have to somehow remove the door trim on the inside to get to the latch and lock mechanisms to release them manually to open the door. Hard to explain but thats basically the idea. Keep in mind that there are probably plenty of replacement door trims in the junkyard so don't be afraid to damage the one you have to gain access.
door handle broke depends on what door handle it is.if door cant be open on out side out side door handle broke.if cant open door on inside inside door handle broke.door handle clip that connects to latch rod broken.when you try open door handle not engage to latch rod.door not going open.have to replace door handle with new clip holds latch rod in place.
remove interior door panel(need special tool to pop plastic clips holding panel to door)with panel off remove plastic film, with window up you should be able to see two 10m nuts-bolts to remove-also have to pop lever off that goes down to door latch
according to my partsman (who has had great advice for many years), you do not have to remove the door panel to replace the door handle which contains the cylinder lock. the handle is released with a screw which you can see when you open the door. you will need a starhead screwdriver or socket. A new handle costs around $40 at a parts store in my area. call around for a locksmith who will re-key your key to the new lock or use the key which comes with the new lock, your choice. i am in dealing with this also
The handle mechanism wears over time. I went on eBay, bought a color matching handle for under $20 and replaced it myself. You have to be careful when removing the plastic panel bezel that surrounds the handle, drill out two rivets and your door will open like new!
