Start up, blows black smoke. Been sitting for about a year.

Any oil that was in the head will seep into the piston head over time and this will blow black, but should stop after 1 min.
If this happens over and over with starting every day its a bad seal on your piston rings, this has nothing to do with the air filter.
If your car has sat for that long you need to change the oil asap as oil and gas will go bad after only a few months gas 4-5 months oil will go bad after 3 months or if it has gotten very hot.
Change oil and test to see if your still blowing black if so go get a compression test done that will tell you if your rings are gone.
Ring jobs can be very costly, hope this is not the case.

How often to change oil on 2001 toyota tacoma oil

you should change every 5,000 kil with a filter, unless you are using a silicone base motor oil then you can stretch it out to 10,000 kil

White smoke out of exhaust

Regarding 2001 audi a6 quattro 2.7t....i was driving to work the car was fine then white smoke starting coming from under the hood and tail pipe. i stopped veilce and alot of oil was dripping from front of car. I towed it home and i looked under the hood and there was oil from valve cover gasket. i let the car sit for a few days, had it running again for a good hour and no white smoke was coming out. I removed the valve cover and gaskets are all bad. i want to know can the valve cover gasket leak cause the white smoke to come from exhaust pipe?

Rapid tapping just started after sitting for a few days; just had an oil change 500 miles ago.what is this tapping and how can it be fixed?

Did you use a Hyundai/Kia filter. If not, it could very well be the problem. I know we had a TSB when I was at the dealership regarding filters and their quality per design. You are also going to need to verify the proper grade of oil used during your oil change.

Heavy Smoke

Yeah,,your engine is showing signs of wear, if it blows a lot of oil out the back end after sitting at a light or stop sign,,then that is a sure indicator of Valve seals needing replacement,,,but it also sounds like your engine is worn out Piston Rings and all.
You could try a product which is used on just about every drag racing strip,,it's called Lucas Oil treatment,,,i don't promise that it will solve all your problems,,,but if it don't help,,it sure wont hurt.

Best of luck to ya.

Yes this can cause smoking, the oil is coming up into air cleaner (you may need to change the air filter) through the crankcase breather, the solution drain out the excess oil, do this as soon as possible or you may damage the engine, the O2 sensors, and the Catalytic Converter.
