Question about 2001 Buick Century

Turn signal mounted headlight dimmer switch will not stay on high

You said I didn't have to remove the steering wheel. I've always had to remove the steering wheel on older cars to get at the turn signal controls and switches. Can you elaborate why this would be any different?

Haven't had time yet but this sure looks like a simple fix as opposed to giving a dealer repair shop the $500 we were quoted to fix the problem.

Boy, they sure are rip-off artists aren,t they?

Thanks so much and I gave you a "Fix-ya" top notch rating.

How do you remove the clamshell around the steering column on a Buick 2000 century? I need to replace the dimmer switch. I can get the bottom off but the top still seems fastened by the ignition.

This switch is not mounted around the column it is mounted on the side. Remove the clamshell around the column and you you can see the switch is mounted with 2 or3 screws. The harness goes down through the column. These are pretty simple to change. No special tools required exept may internal torx because some of these are held in with external torx screws. Please let me know what you find and please rate. Also if you still need more reassurance go to a parts store and look at the new part.

1998 buick century only high beams and turn signals work. No headlights. I have checked breakers, relays, fuses, power at headlight switch, power at headlight harness, all are good.

The Buick Century is equipped with a multi-switch. This switch is an all in one switch that controls your cruise control, windshield wipers and turn signals in one switch. This switch also controls dimming and brightening of your headlights. The dimmer switch is simple to replace, and all you need is a phillips head screwdriver to complete the task.

  1. Removing the Steering Column Shroud
    • Removing the dimmer switch starts at the steering column. To plan this task out, access the steering column by removing the screws holding the steering column shroud in place. This will expose the turn signal lever. Remove the lever by twisting it forward, and pulling it out of the switch.
    Removing the Dimmer Switch
    • The switch is held on by two screws and a wiring harness. The wiring harness can be removed by prying up on the locking tabs and pulling the connector out of the socket. The two screws can be removed with a phillips head screwdriver. The switch will slide out. To install a dimmer switch, be sure to repeat these steps in reverse order.

Low beam lights will not stay on. They come on randomly when moving the tilt steering wheel up and down. High beams stay on ok. Is this a relay problem and can I replace it myself?

sounds like the hi-lo switch to me. I think yours is built into the multi-function wand. A new one is $200, and that's if you don't have cruise control... If you want to try replacing the headlight relay first, that's a lot cheaper, but I don't think it's the problem. Maybe you can swap it with a similar relay just to check and not have to buy one. The relays are in the relay box by the battery.

here are the instructions from to replace the switch:
Steering Column-Mounted Switches
The steering column-mounted dimmer switch can be operated by an actuator control rod from the lever to a remotely mounted switch. Another style incorporates the dimmer switch into the multifunction switch.
If the dimmer switch is part of the multifunction switch:
•You'll need these tools to remove the switch: fender covers, battery terminal pliers, terminal puller assorted combination wrenches, torx drivers, and ohmmeter.
•Place the fender covers around the battery work area. Loosen the negative battery clamp bolt are remove the clamp using terminal pullers.
•Place the battery cable where it cannot contact the battery.
•Remove the shroud retaining screws and remove the lower shroud from the column.
•Loosen the steering column attaching nuts. Do not remove the nuts.
•Lower the steering column enough to remove the upper shroud.
•Remove the turn signal lever by slightly rotating the outer end of the lever then pulling straight on the lever.
•Peel back on the foam shield from the turn signal switch then disconnect the turn signal switch electrical connections.
•Remove the screws attaching the turn signal switch to the lock cylinder assembly and disengage the switch from the lock assembly.
•To reinstall the multiswitch, reverse the procedure.
•Torque the steering column attaching nuts to the amount specified in the service manual.63f909b.gif

No headlights or turn signals on my 1988 mustang

Check the turn signal dimmer switch. It is under the steering wheel. You will need to take the steering wheel off. See if any wires are loose or damaged going to the turn signal switch. Good Luck!

1997 Ford Explorer XLT: Both low beam headlights stopped working simultaneously. High beams work and fuses checked OK. I suspect the switch in the turn signal arm since it is common to both. Is this...

Have you checked both low beam bulbs? I have seen both burn out close together.Does this have tilt steering wheel? If it does, remove the plastic steering column cover.Check the wiring to the dimmer/turn switch. The connector ends would pull out of the hard shell connector, when using the tilt feature. The wire harness was mounted too tight, and didn't allow for the angle in tilt.
