Question about 2002 Mazda Tribute

1 Answer

Bad catalytic converter(s) ???

2002 V6 Mazda Tribute with 136,000 miles -
Top speed 15-25 mph, high revving. Had the rear converter replaced, problem solved ... ... well, solved for about a month. Now the same symptoms have returned. Shop says front converter(s) need to be replaced and that they must order them from Mazda and it will be at a total cost of over $1,100 to replace.

How many converters does it have up front? Do I need to replace both? Do I replace them and then dump the vehicle ASAP?

Thanks, Mike

My mechanic replaced all 3 catalytic converters after replacing the EGR valve twice. a hundred miles later My Tribute is back in the shop again needing a front catalytic converter.

The check engine / gas cap light started blinking and the car would rev in high RPMs before changing gears. There is something under the car in the front glowing red hot when the car is on long enough.

Mine is glowing, but which one needs to be replaced? Front, or back or ?

2002 mazda tribute, catalytic converter is bad but we are not sure which one to replace. A friend suggested cutting one or two out. Does it really need three?

2004 mazda tribute idles high and manifold glows red hot after only 20 minutes after running

When you say manifold, I assume you mean the exhaust manifold. If its the one you can see (there is an exhaust manifold on the back of the engine also for the rear 3 cylinders) its a clogged or fried catalytic converter. There are a couple of catalytic converter cleaners on the market you can try, but most likely it will need to be replaced. Was there another problem recently i.e. bad coil pack etc?

Where are 'Bank one' 'Sensor one' located on the 2002 Mazda Tribute ES

if it's a four cylinder motor it only has one bank of cylinders, sensor one is going to be the one before the catalytic converter, should be visible under the hood. if it is a V6 then bank one is going to be the one closest to the very front of the vehicle, again sensor one is going to be the one BEFORE the catalytic converter.

Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute same engine same problem check out Catalytic Converter problems on both in the long run will have to replace all 3 of the converters may blow a hole in the EGR valve too. Go for after market parts will save you money and not going thru a dealership will help but expect to pay close tto $1,800 mostly due to labor to replace these parts. If you have a check engine light try going to Auto parts store and use their computer to check out code. Not getting this fixed will leave you stranded when it goes. Vehicle will suddenly bogg down and trust me when your doing 60 mph on the hwy. and suddenly this happens to you not a good feeling. Hope this helps.-->

Why does my Mazda Tribute have 3 catalytic converters? Two of them have melted, what may have caused them to fail?

the year of your car shows they have done there job!!
replace then and the applicable o2 sensors

do it soon or you may damage the last one.

My 2002 3.0L V6 Mazda Tribute is blowing out the EGR Valve. I took it to dealer and said the pre-catalytic converter clogged up the main converter. They want 1900.00 to fix. Is there any cheaper solutions?

I have the exact same problem right now. It is possible that a misfire due to a faulty coil damaged the pre-cat and I found pieces of it clogged in the main converter. Unfortunately, to repair it right, I would suggest replacing all three converters as well as upgrading the coils to napa echlin coils.

2002 Mazda Tribute V6 difficult to start.

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE IAC VALE OR IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE IS BAD, WHAT YOU CAN DO IS TAP ON THE VALVE. IT IS LOCATED ON THE INTAKE RIGHT BEHIND THE THROTTLE BODY, JUST TAP ON THE SILVER PART WITH THE BACK OF A SCREW DRIVER A COUPLE OF TIMES. THIS SHOULD UNSTICK THE VALVE AND YOUR TRIBUTE SHOULD RUN. THEN IT IS JUST A MATTER OF REPLACING THE VALVE. YOU CAN GET THEM FROM ANY AUTO PARTS HOUSE.
