Question about 2002 Subaru Legacy

Exhaust fumes in car when heater is running and car is at a stop.

Our 2002 Legacy Outback will emit exhaust fumes inside the car when we stop at traffic light or, stop rolling? We recently had the radiator flushed but the problem has been ongoing for several years with several radiator flushes. Defrost and heat are fine while underway so, I'm not convinced of a heater core problem. Is there some filter that I'm not aware of in or, around the heater core box ala Honda (so I have heard)? It's most noticeable when the ambient air temp is below 32 F.

Hi, What you have is a leak in the exhaust system. What you need to is take the vehicle to a repir shop (anyone that can weld) Drive the car up a ramp, and start it, you will see the fumes emitting from the hole in the exhaust and entering the heater ventilation system(thats how its getting in the car) simply weld the leak shut. Ps It can also be the exhaust manifold gasket that needs replacing, check for a leak first.

air for the inside of the car comes from the vent at the base of the windscreen or is recirculated inside the car
if you see what appears to be mist, fog or smoke from the ac vents ,it is extra cold air from the ac system that is seen as fog when it hits the air in the car
you will know exhaust fumes by the smell

I have a Hyundai Trajet 2002 Gasoline. I have a problem with keeping the engine alive.


The engine is running very rich that is why the exhaust is emitting black smoke. The engine needs a tune up so the air fuel mixture is correct.

Do you have an exhaust leak? That is usually the way fumes start getting into the car. Take it to someplace like Midas. They will do a free inspection of your exhaust system. If they do find a leak, and I suspect that they will, take it around to someone you trust, or get different estimates, as Midas is very expensive.

My 1994 dodge caravan has a slight exhaust smell inside the car while running. any ideas?


Three things come to mind. You may have an exhaust system leak. Or, the rear hatch is not closing good, or not sealing properly, allowing exhaust fumes to enter the rear compartment. If you drive with the rear windows open, the exhaust fumes will be drawn into the vehicle while the vehicle is moving. Just some ideas on where to look for the source of the fumes. Don't take the problem lightly. The fumes can be deadly, or at the very least, make you ill.

Fumes escaping from ac vents inside vehicle while driving and leaves a film residue on inside of windshield whenever the heat or defrost are used.


Hello dedunwoodie.
Your heater core is beginning to leak coolant.
As the fan blows through it it is picking up the liquid and depositing it on your windshield.
It will need to be replaced to solve your problem.
