Question about 2001 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

Volt meter on 01 Dakota is low but truck runs fine

The volt meter on my 01 Dakota (4.7 V8) all of the sudden shows no power. The truck starts fine, runs fine, and all the lights and power options work fine. The meter goes up to normal when the truck starts but after about 10 seconds of running it goes down all the way. I just bought the truck and noticed that the battery looks undersized. I was curious if that could be the cause. I also checked and got this code. I got this info off autozones website.

Trouble Code: P1682
Charging System Voltage Too Low

I presume you live in a warm climate for one thing. the voltage regulator appears to be going bad... the problem with that is most modern alternators have them built into the starter. you may be able to r&r that part or you may have to replace the alternator.
If i remember right autozone will test it for free tho i'm not in the states myself so i'm not sure.

Why is my truck 2003 dodge dakota 4.7 v8 magnum running rough i dont know what else to do

Lets not change any more parts in the hope problem will be solved...Lets trouble shoot...Most probable cause is the Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS)...It is located on the throttle body...Has three wire connector: Wire colors are Orange, Orange/Dark Blue, and Black/Light Blue...If you have a wee bit of experience with a volt meter here is test procedure...Leave TPS connector in place...Take two safety pins ...Push one into rear of connector into Orange/Dark Blue and other into Black/Light Blue...Set meter to read 5 volts...Clip + meter lead to Orange/ Dark Blue pin and - meter lead to Black/Light Blue...Start engine...Meter must read .08 volts at idle...Attempt to increase throttle as high as it will go...Meter must read at least 4 volts...If not TPS is the fault...Send results...saailer

No power to right side (PS) headlight low beam plug socket, new bulb, fuse is good. High beam works, blinker works, park light works. just no low beam and doesn't register any voltage on volt meter.

check low beam fuse when switched on if it has voltage registering across the fuse ,if there is voltage across the low beam RHS fuse then it is possibly a pinched wire from the headlight running back towards inside of the car

Battery discharges in about 3 days if not run.

it may have deffective diode on the charging system(the alternator). 14 volts is an over charge in a battery. ampere reading must be on what the battery designed.

My mom has the same problem w battery w. chrysler 300m(2002) she allready replace w. new battey then chrysler service dept. told her the battery was fine n replace her starter now electric shop says it is...

Sounds like alternator if the battery is not staying charged or the output from alternator the big red wire is lost connection to battery +.
a voltmeter you can check with across battery and it should show minimum 13.8 volts minimum to be charging.
if the battery is low it should show 14.7 volts if it shows 12 volts or less with lights heater etc running then alternator is not charging.
You can get a cheap volt ohm meter from radio shack or walmart and use the DC setting 20 volt scale on meter and start the car and turn on everything and put the test leads of meter across battery terminals and see what the voltmeter says.

1995 dodge dakota v8 -no power to brake light switch.

The brake light switch may be faulty,it has to be replaced. You can hook a Volt Ohm Meter (VOM) or test light across the switch contacts, and then press the brake pedal down to make sure the switch closes.Brake lights not working is something electrical. Check the connections at the bulb socket if the fuses are good. Connections get corroded and such and prevent power from passing. If all of the lights failed, check fuses again and check the switch that activates them. Do the running lights work? If so that points to the switch that activates the brake light curcuit.

Ran fine all day long till, stopping for dinner and all of a sudden the battery is dead and barely made it to the house and it knocked itself into neutral and turned off

You might find your Alternator has a problem.
Have you tried to jump start it?

Leave the jump cables of for 20 minutes after it starts so you don't zap your electronics when removing the cables.

Get your self a volt meter and while the car is running put it on your battery terminals. At idle it should read just over 12v. Give it a rev and you should see the volts go up over 14v. If there is no change then you have a problem with your alternator.

Although there is so much magic in modern cars these days it could be something else broken that could cause similar symptoms.

You will need to check the fuel pressure, if it is on the minimum pressure side or lower then you will need to change the fuel pump.

2000 Silverado 2500 will not start

Can you hear the fuel pump running just before you try to start? Turn the key to the Acc. position (just before starting) and listen for the pump. It should run for 1 - 2 seconds.
