I think the two smaller terminals on the starter are swapped

I believe your starter is inadvertently energized, most likely starter control circuit. Recommend remove starter relay, reconnect battery, probe relay socket to identify energized circuit, repair as necessary. For wiring diagrams, There is a small charge, 15 dollars a year per vehicle registered.

PS. In a similar situation I found the insulation broken on the starter control circuit. The ring terminal when tightened, contacted the high current terminal on the starter. Causing starter engagement when battery was connected. If this is the case the problem lies between the starter relay and the starter itself. So removing the relay will not stop the engine from starting when battery is connected.

If the starter solenoid is ground switched this would be possible. But i believe the solenoid is switched with battery+. It is important to remember that this is a simple electrical circuit. It just seems confusing because there is a malfunction. A high current cable attaches from the battery to the high current terminal of the starter. A low current (switching) lead attaches to the start terminal. Both share the same ground point the block. The high current line supplies a standby charge to the high current terminal of the starter. Inside the starter there is a high current switch or contactor which is electromagnetically operated by the "Start" circuit. So if the starter cranks the motor as soon as there is power available at the high current or "threaded terminal", then the contacts inside the starter are stuck together or the start or "low current" circuit is energized. Stuck contacts can sometimes occur due to extended cranking or attempting to crank a seized motor. I would remove the start lead from the starter and reconnect the battery. If the starter still malfunctions then you know the contacts are stuck. If it no longer malfunctions then you know the start lead is energized for some reason. Is it possible that you connected the oil pressure sender lead to the starter?

Blazer will not start have gas battery is fine

If I understand you right, it sounds like the starter solenoid went bad and could possibly work again when the engine cooled down. The other scenario is that the ignition switch is bad (on steering column) or the neutral safety switch located on the transmission side. A real fluke would be that the starter BOLTS CAME LOOSE AND JAMMED THE STARTER, IF THIS IS THE CASE LOOSEN STARTER BOLTS, WIGGLE STARTER THEN TIGHTEN BOLTS TO SPECS. 25268178-sbjsv11dlntqjzkc4qi5qeet-5-0.gif

what years? her ill give examples (no 1.8L sports)
in each case keeping original in/exh manifold of origional
this is called, a Long block swap......!
96 to 95 16v ok ( the crank sensor just sets there, doing zip)
96 to 95 8v no go. ( it will run by ECU while have fuel mapping)
95 8v to 96 16v no go ( missing crank sensor and mapping issues)
95v 16v to 96 16v,(missing crank sensor, move it.)

and you can swap any with harness and ecu. and manifolds.

see swaps here

and links to near infintate swap data.

There is no "KILL" switch. something isnt hooked up correctly. or a relay is bad/ fuse? I hope the starter wasnt replaced for no reason? Be sure IGN A fuse is good,(under hood fuse box) CRANK fuse, (in dash fuse panel), STARTER RELAY (in under hood fuse box) , battery good? connections tight? shifter in PARK?

2000 olds drove to work fine this morning this afternoon it would not CRANK, just a load starter/solenoid click. changed starter this afternoon, still same load click, checked battery volts 12.6 , cleaned...

This might noy be of much help, buy I would try a remote starter switch hooked up to the starter, with the ignition switch in the run position..then push the remote start switch.
This would give you an idea if the ignition switch is a part of the problem

Just put a new engne in my 2000 toyota celica gt. old engine spun a bearing and threw a rod. i have the new engine all hooked up i have spark an it cranks over but will not start. i also can not hear the...

If you have spark than your fuel pump should turn on for a couple seconds prior to cranking the ignition. Try turning the key to the on position without cranking and listen for the pump. You should hear a two second run by the pump. Be in a very quiet place to do this as it is not very loud. Or have someone listen by the fuel filler door with the cap out.

You might want to check your fuel pump relay for power as well. Maybe it is bumped or damaged fromt he engine swap? It should be up front with a bunch of other relays. Wouldnt it be funny if they took it out to make sure the engine wasnt cranked prematurely?!

Good luck and be careful.

89 cougar cranks when key is off

There are 2 connections on the solinoid the main positive feed.(thick wire from battery)which will sometimes have other wires connected with it and a thinner wire(approx. 3mm thick) with a push on lug from the ignition relay.Check that none of those wires are in the wrong will cause what you are describing

Engine won't start

Sounds like a bad fuel pump. Not uncommon on these vehicles.
