2004 GMC Yukon Steering Problem

We are having a problem with our power steering. When we turn to the right it's as if we have no power steering, however, there is no problem in turning to the left. We tried turning it while in neutral and reving the engine (to up the RPMs) but we experienced the same problem. Anyone with any idea as to what this could be?...

I have the exact same problem -- NO power steering to the right. The left works fine. I have a 2004 GMC Yukon XL.

i have the same problem too. Now i am starting to feel knocking and noises when i turn on ramps and i slow speeds. This is very dangerous driving like this but i just wonder if its a pump or the rack?

Same here -- 2004 XL 4WD. We had it looked at in GM dealership and they said it could be the steering shaft isn't properly lubed, or it could just be a fluid level issue. Both have been checked and are fine. Does anyone know if it is common for a pump to go bad, and only show signs when turning in one direction?

I have almost the same problem, it will steer to the right but not the left. I think it is the steering gear (box). If it was the pump, it wouldn't steer in either direction.

I'm going to replace the steering gear (box) first.

I have the same problem, low speeds and only when i turn to the left, steering locks or jams, but only at low speeds, and parking lot manuevers. Will replace gear box, simple 3 or 4 bolts, and can easily be done in a drive way or home garage. Hope this helps! 90% its the gear box even if you have the right one already.
Tips** you should have the 680 gear box and not the old one (670 3 bolt patter). The 680 should have 4 bolts. But there are issues and may need to be replaced. I had a faulty one!

Whats wrong with my 2004 yukon when it doesnt turn right?

This sounds like a bad valve in the rack and pinon. I just had a simalar problem on a Mitsubishi .. I replaced the rack with a A1 Cardone rebuilt rack and it cured the problem.. Rebuilding a rack is a job better left to the pro rebuilders.. you can call the teck line for A1 cardone and ask them what they think.

I have a 2004 Yukon that i'm having steering problems with. Appears to have no powersteering when turning left but turns to the right with no trouble

Check the fluid level first but i am convinced your electrical power steering motor has failed. There is no solution. Only replacing the pump.

Steering problem

More than likely is your rack n' pinion, never the less open the power steering reservoir check for circulation, before taking it to 1 place always get at least 3 different opinions and choose that one thats more logical...get somebody that can warranty everything they do this way you'll know if they know what they are doing instead of starting the bill..scan if they are really concern about you more than geting in your pocket

Very hard to steer wheel in my 2003 gmc yukon and there is plenty of steering fuid in it

Turn car off - Remove power steering cap, and turn streering wheel hard right or left and fluid should pour out (cover surroundings with rags.) If so, check your power steering pump.

Power steering problem when turning right

I'm not sure if that truck has rack and pinion steering, or a steering sector. In either case, it sounds like you have stuck valve and the hydraulic pressure is fighting you, instead of helping you. When ever you turn the steering wheel the valve is supposed to move and direct the hydraulic oil pressure to help you steer. The valve is built into the sector or the rack and pinion, you may have to replace the assembly. There are companies that recondition those items so you might want to shop around.

Easy steering to left, difficult steering to right

he sounds right on that one..sounds like bad seal in the steering box or bad valve.--as far as replacing the power steering pump---i wouldnt do that unless its growling right now. the lines will be disconnected from the steering box, now is a great time to flush the power steering pump. but yes, i think he is on the right track with the steering box being bad

Check to see if the power steering pump is still turning. If you have a broken drive belt (serpentine belt or "fan" belt), and the pump doesn't turn, you have no power assist. If the pump is still turning, check the fluid level in the reservoir.
