The last time the light came on we took it to a local shop and they said that one of the spark plugs was burned out and and we could replace only one. Now the light is on again how can I determine which one to replace? I'm not sure the part is called a spark plug, But that's what they called it. Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated.

Both Autozone and Oreillys will scan your van without charge. A blinking light usually means an intermittent problem and may be picked up on a scanner this time. The local shop did right by checking the wires and plugs.
What they did was to check the spark side of the problem. You may have a problem with a fuel injector or its wire which also causes a miss. Nothing is easy to work on anymore. If this is your only vehicle it makes it hard to do something.
If the next scan does not help you about all you can do is catch it missing, shut it off, and pull the plugs. You can tell if a plug is not firing by looking at it. Or you can mist the engine with a water spray bottle , keep it dark, and start the engine and look for sparks jumping.
Running rough and misfiring is usually a one or more bad spark plug wires. Don't go back to that dealer. Replace the wires or have your mechanic do it for you. If you replace them, take one off at a time and install the new one. If you put the wires back on in the wrong order, it will misfire.
P0171 is LEAN and P0303 is misfire number 3 cyl. Its time to stop guessing and pay for a correct diagnosis. Find a shop that works on VW and has the tools to work on it. DO NOT put those Bosch Platinum Spark plugs in that Ottozone tries to sell everybody.
yes i would change the plug wires , you can take a spray bottal with water and spray that wire, and if it starts to run real bad then it is shorting out, you may also have a injector going bad you can test this buy puting a ohms meter on it and ck the ohms it should read the same or close to the same as the other if not it will need replaced
well you wont need to change the ecm if its not burt yet.
try correcting the short first before you do burn out the comp.
if this is the model with the in line coil pack you will need to make sure the heater hoses are not drooping down on the pack.use wire straps to raise the heater hoses just off the pack.you may want to remove the pack and put some dielectric lube on the spark plug boots so it goes down all the way on the spark plug.when the plug miss fires and causes the engine to stumble the comp raises the idle to compesate.then the plug fires again and the idle surges.

You describe this as an acceleration problem however, if the car does throw a check engine light it should be recorded in system memory so it can be pulled by scanning with and OBDII scanner. It sounds as if the car is being starved for fuel on acceleration. Check the fuel lines for kinks as well as check the fuel pressure. The problem could be a faulty fuel pump that has yet to completely die.
bad spark plug wire coil pack that the most common thing smell and shacking sure its not running on all cylinder to find out what broken start the engine disconnect at coil pack cylinder number 3 be carefull not to get a shock disconnecting the wire if lots of spark to it back disconnect wire at the plug when removing it should here spark jumping if good change the spark plug it should fix it if not let me no good luck pierre
