best advice is to get a workshop manual for the engine
heads can generally be removed in car
next set the valve timing before removing the belt. check and record the position of the cam timing marks
don't move the crank after the head is pulled
It all depends on the year, best info is to call your local machine shop or check with your local parts stores to see if they have a Chilton or Haynes repair Manual on hand that has already been opened. If it has you can look inside and get the correct info. Hope this helps
If by water you mean coolant or anti freeze then yes you probably have a head gasket out.You can remove the plugs and turn the motor over and see if water comes out of the plug holes.One other thing is if you replace the head gaskets do them both not just one head.Hope this helps.Good luck.
TIMMING BELT MARKS
NEED MORE INFO ON ENGINE 4 CYL OR 6 CYL
ALSO IF YOU JUST REPLACED THE HEAD ASSEMBLY MEANS YOU BENT THE VALVES WHEN THE BELT BROKE. TIMMING MARKS ARE DIFFERANT ON MANY MAKES PURCHASE A CHILTON MANUAL FOR THE YEAR AND MAKE OF YOUR CAR THESE MANUALS ARE GREAT AND TAKE THE GUESS WORK OUT OF THE TIMMIMG MARK ISSUE
no real pit falls just drain coolant remove head have head checked at machine shop. Clean engine surface good and rise good with brake clean, make sure head gasket is on correct before head goes on bolt down with proper torque and sequence then finish up then drain oil.
If you have never replaced a head gasket before the best advice I can give is leave it to a professional, as on modern vehicles there are a number of electrical, emissions, and vacuum connections that can and will cause very serious problems if not disconnected or reconnected properly.
If you feel the need to replace it yourself it's essentially10 steps.
KEEP ALL FASTENERS, AND WIRING HARNESSES ORGANIZED
remove the upper fan shroud
remove the serpentine belt, fan and pulley
loosen and remove the alternator
remove the air cleaner assembly up to the throttle body
remove the upper radiator hose, thermostat, and housing loosen and remove the heater hose
remove all electrical connections from the upper intake, then remove the fuel lines from the lower intake. Good luck with the rear fuel connection as it is snug against the block and the firewall
loosen and remove the heater hose bracket on the intake manifold
remove the intake manifold
remove the remaining bolts from the accessory bracket on the front of the engine and set the A/C compressor and PS pump aside (DO NOT DISCONNECT HOSES)
remove the oil dipstick/filler tube bracket and pull it out
disconnect exhaust manifold from exhaust down pipe
remove exhaust manifold nuts, then remove exhaust manifold
compress and remove rocker arms and push rods (KEEP IN ORDER)
remove head bolts
Remove head without prying between head and block
Send head out for machining or replace with new head
