I inherited an 85 ram 150 about 6 years ago from a friend of mine. the truck has not been in running condition for about 5 years. it wouldnt crank or even turn over. i recently decided to finally get the truck working so i bought a new battery, spark plugs and wires, a new starter, changed the oil and gas. now it will turn over, but it wont stay running. i tried starter fluid in the carb which will usually crank it up, but it wont stay running. also i usually have to use a jumpstarter, even with the new battery. it has an inline 6cyl. any suggestions to getting the truck running? its been sitting a while...

Re: 85 dodge ram 150 engine troubles
Sound like a fuel pump ,but dont buy one until you check all the fuel lines right to the tank i had that problem with my 86 it sat for 1 year and mice chewed a hole in the rubber fuel line under the bed, the pump took me 20 minutes to install and it cost like 14 dollars but i dident need it, check your timming for hard starting
I was in the same situation inheriting one myself that was sitting for 7 years and had the same problem i changed ann fluids and got it cranking and almost started but the ground wire was glowing red so i sanded down a spot and put in a new ground. it got it running but never stayed so all i did was put a new alternator and ran new fuel threw it and it runs like a million bucks.now the only thing is the brake lines or master cylinder.

Yolu need another engine,do you plan on keeping,if so then a Jasper engine is what you want,I have a 85 Nissan 720 truck with the 2.4 engine, got a Jasper engine over 6 years ago and have 41.000 miles on it,it came with a 3 year,100,000 mile warranty, you will have to find a local Jasper installer to get,I did, still runs like new. Here's a link to the Jasper Engines.com site, they are nation wide. http://www.jasperengines.com/index.php
you need to test the alternator output in the car with the engine running it should read around 14.2 vdc. if the out put is lower the voltage regulator is part of the engine control computer. and will need to be tested. if the voltage is correct. then you will need to do a battery draw test hear is a viedo on that.
Sounds like a problem I had with my '85 Dodge D150 Ram Prospector. In my case, the automatic choke was broken and it was starved for air during acceleration because the choke was always closed. It ran fine at idle or very slow acceleration. I wired the choke open and it runs much better, although it is much more difficult to start as the fuel mix is lean due to the extra air. Once it gets warmed up, though, it runs fine. I hear that the barrel carb on mine often has problems.
There are many people having trouble with Dodges Electrical.
I had a 1994 Dodge Ram. The Red Dodge Ram I had it malfunctioned and my brake became the throttle.
I had to put the truck in reverse then park. to stop, after it was out of control at 80 mph a hill slowed us down. Are you sure
its not electrical and the curse control is not giving you trouble?
Mine had multifunction switch was not working and the headlight switch burned up. I also found out that Audi had problem with the brake becoming the throttle
in the 1980s Daimler Chrysler and Audi were German made. I don't think
there is an easy answer. I hope you stay safe. Another man is having
strange trouble also. I'm sure there are many more people with trouble
with the vehicles. I wish Dodge would step up to the truth. and recall
their nightmares. I saw many of their 1996 Dodge trucks at their
dealers shop with all the electrical pulled out.
does the check engine flash while driving, a quick test, cause I suspect the coil pack, when dark open the hood start the truck and with a water bottle spray the coil pack if you see sparks replace it, change many of those here ....
The 318 was an engine fitted to all manner of vehicles dating back for quite a few years.A torqueflite sounds right although your trans woulld be different than sedan etc due to having a trransfer case to have to run.It may be easier to drop it off at auto trans specialist who can recondition the original one.At least it would save hassles from compatibility issues etc.For engine parts look under sedans that used the same engine.Asalvage yard would be a good place to look for the numbers you need .Are there no web sites that deal with your type of truck?4x4 clubs etc
