Bmw320 td se 1999-2000 model battery warning light came on smoke
Driving home and the battery light came on then i smelt a burning rubber smell from my car small amount of smoke coming from near the alternator also i looked at the battery area in the boot and there is alot of water underneath it
Re: bmw320 td se 1999-2000 model battery warning light...
Sounds like your water pump is out or siezed momentarily. This would cause your alternator to not charge your battery (hence battery light) and also would explain the water. The smoke would have been caused by the friction from the belt. Does the car still run?

If your battery light came on, and you smelled burning rubber, it could be that your belt that drives the alternator, which charges your battery is broken or flipped upside down. Do not drive with the battery light on or else you will stop dead when the battery does not have enough charge in it to keep the car running. If you decide to drive and not follow my advice, then be sure all extra electrical power is off eg. radio, fan, DVD, lights etc.
You would need to check the wiring and fuses to see if anything is blown or melted. The warning light is for both hydraulic brakes and the charging system. In your case the light probably came on because the alternator stopped charging the battery.
SOUND LIKE ALTERNATOR SHAFT BEARING FAILING CAUSING ALTERNATOR PULLEY LOCK OR PUT DRAG ON DRIVE BELT CAUSING BURN RUBBER SMELL OR DRIVE BELT LOOSE CAUSES BELT SLIPPAGE MAKE BELT RUB AND BURN.WHEN YOU SMELL RUBBER BELT BURN SMELL WATCH OUT DRIVE IS GOING TO BREAK.
Yes it is . The remote starter wire has touch together and is wanting to start the starter, they have shorted together, The burning rubber smell is the wire melting due to the electrical short. Take the remote starter out plus the push button and reinstall using new set of wire And if you decide to install a new remote starter youll have to install a fuse in line with the positive wire.
More then likely, it is a fluid of some type. I would say it is oil burning on the engine. Besides a smell and a little smoke, it shouldn't hurt anything. It would mean you have a leak of some kind though.

first thing is to check your oil these cars are notorious for having engines that burn oil. the battery and brake light problem i had to take it to the dealer and they wound up relearning the computer i cant remember what exactly they did but it worked. I wound up replacing the engine ran about 3500 dollars. Mine is a v4 and runs like a cream puff I hope its not an engine swap
