check fluids for contanination..(small aluminum shavings and debris in the fluid)sounds like a filter and fluid change are to be done(cheaper first) then if problem still exist look at shifter linkages and cable for operation.if still time for overhaul/replacement if car is worth it..good luck
This car has a lock out device as all vehicles have. You need to depress the brake firmly to shift into gear as you may know. The solenoid that retracts the lock out for the shifting is at fault and needs to be replaced. You will see it if you remove the entire top of the shifting console
Keep the hell away from it, many things changed after the first model year which was 91, Spend another 50 bucks and get a 92. Pull up the shifter boot and look at the shift cable ends where they attach to the bottom of the shifter. Most likely the bushings will be broken.
If the shifter feels loose, the shifter linkage / damper to the gearbox became disconnected, or broken. These parts are serviceable, and should be replaced when shifting ceases to be accurate, and gears are hard to find. If the shifter feels normal, then the clutch is out of adjustment and not disengaging completely, or there is a failure of some sort inside the gearbox.
Automatic cars have a built in safety to prevent the shifter from accidentally shifting into gear. Most cars require pressing on the brake to disengage this locking system and some require the pressing of the brake along with pressing the release on the shifter to shift it into gear
