No, just a phillips and a large flat driver or pry tool. Remove plug from upper rear side of door. Pry off the triangular cover that is above the panel and covers the backside of the mirror mount. Then lift the lower edges of the panel to pop out or pry out the nylon plugs that anchor the panel to the door. Do this carefully. Next unscrew the handle cover. You'll see the lever handle is attached to the latch rod with a nylon sleeve over the hook on the rod This is flipped around to release it. When you peek in it will be self-evident. I found this the hardest piece to get back on. Do this carefully to not lose or break the little nylon sleeve.New ones can be purchased if you do. Next you need to find the screws that secure the panel. The first is totally visible. The next is found when you pop off the soft vinyl arm rest starting from the back. The next and last is a vinyl covered screw visible in the upper right of panel. Think that's it. Then pop out the electronic controls for windows. Once removed there is a waterproof plastic attached to door with black sticky caulking. Peel this off carefully and you can reseal it later. Of course you need to unplug wiring, and also remove door handles and screws as you go. I think I got all the details for you.

How do I remove the inside door trim on a Mazda 2003 Protege so I can replace the exterior left hand rear view mirror?

Usually you have to remove all the handles etc. from the inside. (The screws are covered with plastic plugs or similar.) Then the trimming is held by plastic or metal clips around the edges. Carefully pry the interior off and gain access behind.

Trying to take off door panell

On the inside trim, you can remove screws (these screws may be covered by filler pieces or may be visible, or they may require you pry a plastic piece off that covers the screws) that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls.

If needed, you can pull back the weather seal (can't reuse it, but it's not that important) and you will be able to access everything inside the door

Removing the door skins are not hard, the problem is that they normally use a special tool. Without the tool you may break a few of the plastic clips. If so no worries go to your local automotive department and look for the clips.
You will also have at least one screw that attaches the skin to the door frame. Usually remove the bottom of door panel and work around both sides until you get to the window. Then remove the screw and unplug any of the power options..
Haynes or  Chiltion manual for your car should show you details.. It is easy for the average DIY person.
The handle is just as easy. Do you have metric and torx because you will need them.
