Question about 1991 Peugeot 405
I have a Peugeot 406 year 2001, familiale(SW). The car has a problem in the automatic transmission. Every morning, when I leave to work, after a couple of miles the transmission skips the gear and goes to a "SAFETY MODE" state. The leds for snow and sport start flashing. I turn of the engine and turn it on again and the transmission goes back to normal. This happens up to three times in a row. After that it does not happen again until the end of the day, after some 8 hours on the parking lot.
Wat is wrong? Can somebody give me some tips to fiz this problem?
Possible causes are; Low fluid level, bad pump, bad control valving, or a bad torque converter....accordianman

The problem is not on the gearbox, it is on the car's earth system. Peugeot fits the earth wires in the engine bay very badly. They do not properly remove the car paint from the earthing points before fitting the earth wire. So the solenoid in the gearbox discontinue circuit intermittantly and then return to safety mode. My solution is to clean up all the relevant earth points and to add in extra high quality aftermarket ground wires together with a Suntune Electrical stabilizer. Additionally, I also check up all the senors connection of both two ECU. If you do the job properly, your box shall run very smoothly and response quickly as it should be.

If this car has the dpo transmission, this is easy to check. Open the bonnet look down the front of the transmission (right hand side) if there is a square black sump pan it is a dpo. it is most likely a sensor or a solonoid fault. You will have to have the transmission scanned by a specialist. Let us know where you are and we can point you in the right direction. email@example.com

I had exactly the same problem and added a bottle of Translube RED ($10) to the fluid. It suppost to free sticking valves. It helped and now the problem only occurs half as often.
