Question about Ford Taurus

Okay i have a 1997 ford taurus and on the steering column is a mecanism that sits on the left sife of the column and from what i see it lets the gear selector engage it has a little lock on it and if you push it down it will let you put it into gear and it has a power plug going to it what is the function of it and what is it called.

This could be the brake and shifter interlock that you see there, and this button is the bypass in the event that the interlock fails and you cannot get the car out of "park"....accordianman

Usually a sign the tumblers in the lock cylinder have worn out or jammed.
You may have to get the lock cylinder drilled out and replaced.

Just disconnect the battery and wait about 30 mins..That way the capaciters have wind down..Then you be fine..You shouldnt have to remove the bags ,,to remove the dash..Becareful when you let the steering column down,,there is a small cable for your gear indicater ..Real easy to break..When you remove the cluster youll see it..

The turning signal lights dont work

If none of your turn signals are working, you most likely need to replace the flasher, which is located on the left side of the steering column, under the dash. It just plugs in, easy to remove and replace, not expensive either.

Telescopic Steering wheel won't move down - I hear a gear spinning

Open the gear motor on the left hand side of the telelscopic assembly. Take the plate off held by 4 philips screws. Using a 10mm socket, remove the bolt holding the platic gear. Remove plastic gear and insert the reverse way. Over the years, one side of the gears get worn out.
