If not serviced lately, that would be a good place to start. Filter & oil change on transmission.

1st off has the tranmission fluid and filter ever been replaced? Do that first.

94 explorer a4ld intermittant 2-3 shift

Are you sure your fluid level is correct? When they don't shift until warmed up,that is usually dirt or low fluid.
I would get a coupla cans of SEA-FOAM trans. treatment,NOT the motor treatment. Follow directions and sit in the car shifting it thru all gears many times. Take it out on freeway and kick it down to make it shift down and let up suddenly to make it upshift. Do this several times.
If it starts working for you,do a filter/fluid change really soon. I have saved them this way,but it's about 50/50 that you'll need a PROPER rebuild or replacement. There is dirt in there somewhere or the pump is giving up on you. don-ohio

I have a 1994 ford explorer with 124k miles. It will not shift out of first gear until it is completly warm. Once warm, it shifts thru all gears fine. I took this to a transmission repair and he hooked...

Although Restoring is not a miracle cure it could help it last till can replace , Unless it's gone to far and the bands id shot , You might try changing the flouid and filter it could be stoped up and not allowing the fluid to run through the filter. This will cost arround $75 at a tranny shop. Good luck toy you.

I have a 2000 metro the trans shifts hard when you first start up from 2nd to 3rd. But after that it seams not to shift down from 3rd no matter how many times you spot and go again.

Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST.
Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check TPS for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS.
Thank you for using fixya and keep us posted.

the transmission is loseing internal fluid pressure, its time for a rebuilt transmission. The A4ld that your explorer has is prone to trouble in this area. A good rebuilt transmission may cost at least $1700 dollars.

The first thing you need to fix is the fact that it will not go into park. I think the shift lever is maladjusted. There should be a way to adjust it near the transmission. Get this dealt with because I am thinking it could be a simple problem. If after you get it adjusted, it still does not immediately kick in to drive, then I think you have a serious tranny problem. You did not say how many miles were on the car, but if it has high miles (more than 100,000) and it has not ever been rebuilt, then it will probably need to be. The trannys in these Explorers were notoriously bad.
