Freelander TD4 diesel has a chain (mega bucks), L series diesel (pre BMW engine) has a belt (plus a small belt for the injection pump). the K series 1,8 petrol and KV6, 2.5L also have belt's.
No it not a common problem, this engine is an INTERFERNCE ENGINE, which means, when camshaft bind and you need to fine out why it bind did you loose oil pressure or timing belt breaks, piston's will hit cylinder head valve's.Land Rover recommends replacement of timing belt every 72,000 mile's.
there should be a diagram on the inside of the hood on how to replace it... should either be on the hood itself or it will be located near the fan guard.... not hard easy thing
