Zx2 engine stalls at idle speeds

Engine stalls after idleing for about 30 seconds. The rpm's gradually fall below 1000 and the engine shakes and stalls.

Your symptoms can be from many things however I have seen this often from stopped up fuel filters in several different cars.
It could also be from very bad gas.
My suggestion is that if the car has high mileage OR you have recently goten gas from an unfamiliar service station, you shoudo change the fuel filter and put some good fuel additive in (after the new filter) to get rid of any water or other contaminates in the gas tank.
I recommend "SeaFoam". It is more expensive that others but has a very good reputation. It really works!

How to check the idle speed? my car stalls at the light

Hello Patricia Kennedy.

Besides a dirty air filter... listed below... idle air control valve... the idle speed is pretty tamper proof...

If the car has not been tuned up RECENTLY... that would be a STRONG recommendation before fine-tuning the idle speed.

The problem I am seeing ALL OVER the web... is the idle is too fast... (absolutely will cause STALLS).

All things being reasonable... your tachometer should show an RPM OF 650 to 1000 rpm... above that is quite EXCESSIVE...

A real TUNE-UP MANUAL would be required to properly set the SPEED ... but only after EVERYTHING had been serviced, cleaned and replaced...

Tuning up a car with DIRTY FILTERS & WORN spark plugs is an WASTE of MONEY!!

What I am seeing EVERYWHERE... is a HIGH IDLE problem... (above 2000 RPMs... That will ABSOLUTELY cause your car to stall at a STOP... because your TORQUE CONVERTER is designed to lock up (quit acting like a clutch)...

If your idle speed it above 1000 rpm... that WAS a BIG RECALL issue for GM engines...

Check out the links below... a high idle can stall an engine better than a low one...!!

Comment me back if I am not being particularly clear... or wwatch some of the videos I have attached.

Good luck.

I have a 2003 ford expedition and when you set and it idles for a bit like at stop light or just sitting in traffic it like sputters and feels like the whole engine is gonna fall out. Please help

hot or cold engine, or both? key,
key fact too, can you save the stall or low RPm with fast right foot action??????
that is misfire, can be caused by 50 things,
most things are in engine, like cracked valves or pistons, etc.
but in physics its just 3 (assumes battery is at 13.3v to 15v running)
stalls or near stalls.
when the engine shook, was RPM below 800 RPM
at below 500 all engines shake, that is normal for idle speed control failure.
ever service the engine? at every 60,000 miles,? do the listed things
in the operators guide? at the least spark plugs and filters.?
tune up parts are those parts that never last the life of an engine, 300k.+
no engine option stated. there are many.

800RPM hot misfire is another matter.
that will be (compression good all cylinder) bad spark on any ,bad fueling or egr stuck open (egr will cause dropping idle, if extreme leak)
no engine stated so cant look up if it has EGR. some engines dont
the use a detuned CAM to do same thing.
its and older truck some have huge mileage after , 11 long years. huge. (unstated )
oh all old cars or high mileage a compression test and leak down test
are the 1st step by me.
you cant burn fuel well with flat compression.

Idle problem on v6 ba astina hunts from 1000/1500 revs

Engine stall or RPM fluctuates at idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

Rpm when idle 1000 aircon off turn on A/C 600 rpm this is normal?

No you may have a dirty idle speed control valve. Follow the instructions below to clean it.

If i turn on my a/c my car will be shaking

It can also be your throttle body is really dirty, bad sensor. When you turn the air on, does the engine speed increase, especially according to the tachometer? if not,I would check the simple stuff.Have you had any tuneup work done lately? If not,you might want to checkout the tune up items.Distributor cap, ignition rotor, spark plugs and plug wires.Sounds like you are overdue for a tune up the idle is supposed to increase when the ac is turned on. it is possible this is not working or the idle is too low. the car have compensation systems to increase the rpm when the AC is loading the engine, and slowing it down. Newer cars idle speed often isn't adjustable, so the problem's in the ECM (computer) or a sensor. does the car idle on correct RPM, should be around 700 with no AC on. If its run below 700, you might need to adjust your rpm up, however, try to get a tune up first and get the RPM to the proper spec. if the engine already running low RPM, it will drag the engine idle down very low which will cause the engine to shake or stall.

I have an 89 Honda Accord lx and it idles too low

The idle speed for my 88 accord lx is 700-850 rpm for standard idle speed. The stalling is a seperate issue. When were plugs, wires, air/gas filters and distributor last checked? How long has engine been running for when you stall? Is the temprature gauge high? Any lights coming on when stall occurs? I am not a mechanic, but a DYI'er. These are common questions I am always asked when troubleshooting my Honda. :)
