My Toyota Camry 1996 2200 Engine is guzzling fuel

To start with, let me confess that I am a novice to cars. This in fact is my first car.
The car guzzles fuel. About 50 litres for 100 miles. I am not exaggerating. One technician told me that there is a switch that controls fuel intake and that mine is bad and disconnected.
I actually confirmed that a previous technician removed a three pin plug. There are 2 pins connected to this device that are just dangling in the bonnet now. One is four pin, the other is 3 pin.
This device is what the wire coming from the accelerator is connected to.
My question is: What is the function of this device and what can be done to my car to make it stop this madness.

I am amazed at the speed of your response. I am definitely going to refer my friends to this site.

I am thinking of taking shots of the condition of the car now and sending it to you.

Please, reply if you think this is appropriate. However, I will need a e-mail box I can send it to.

I have created an e-mail address in Yahoo! The account is [email protected] and the pwd is fixya123. I have taken those pictures and they have been sent to that address.

Kindly take a look at the pictures to see how the part is currently connected. You will notice that 2 pins are unplugged. You will also see some pictures of the part I bought to replace the one in the car. My technician said that one is not the match for it.

I need ur advice to know how to proceed.

Send the pictures to [email protected]

I looked at the yahoo address that you provided, but the pictures do not open.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

I would really like to see your pictures.

Unfortunatly, we experts here do not post our e-mail address, the info we provide is open to the masses, all of our communication is thru FixYa.

Post up your e-mail address, and I will contact you.

    Get the pictures taken. Thanks.

You have a host of issues. The wire disconnected form the accelerator is the throttle position sensor; this tells the computer where your foot is on the gas pedal. This needs to be hooked up. Additionally, it sounds like your Oxygen sensor(s) may be disconnected. If you want maximum fuel mileage, these too need to be hooked up. Best advice: Get yourself a better mechanic. No good mechanic would allow your car to drive around with this stuff disconnected. Please get back to me if you need more info.

Toyota solara engine knocking and car cutting off

Meloe77, there's a high possibility you have a mechanical failure inside the engie causing the knocking sound. (Check the oil?)
The reason for shutting off is because the knock sensor can hear it, and the powertrain control module (PCM, herefore) is trying to detune the engine to eliminate the sound, (as if it were caused by bad gasoline.) The fact that there is a mechanical knocking sound, means that the sound cannot be eliminated by detuning of fuel or spark mapping, therefore it starves for fuel and/or spark causing the engine to stop running.
My recommendation: Have the vehicle TOWED to a reputable mechanic and ask him if its possible that I'm right.

I own a 98 Model Toyota Camry, and when its on Reverse gear it sounds ok but on Auto drive, the engine and in fact the entire car starts vibrating terribly....What should i look out for here?

You need to check the engine and transmission mounts. Have someone sit in the vehicle, and with the engine running get them to put in into reverse, then into drive with their foot on the brake. If the engine rocks quite noticeably there is a broken/worn engine/transmission mount
