Question about 1994 Volvo 940

Check engine light on for a couple months

Check engine light had been on for a couple months. weather got cool and engine had hard time starting and even when got up to operating temperature car would run smooth but hesitate when accellerating. The preheat hose had roted loose 1 year earlier so I had been driving without one - so thought maybe was the problem - ordered one and put a new one on and also checked the air filter as it had been replaced after the old preheat hose was removed. Thought was only happening when cold temperature outside (live in S.E. florida so cool means 55-70.
New preheat hose and air filter did not solve problem and now it has gotten worse daily whether outside temperatur is warm or cold. Barely made it to a mechanic as kept sputtering and missing. Mechanic read error code as 204 (he said) and replaced the water temperature sensor. The shop closed by the time they replaced the sensor - and I left to drive back home - about 5 miles. I barely made it home as the missing got worse and after stopping at a red light when it turned green and I started to accelerate the car bogged down and was missing and could barely move then it sputtered and could get up a little speed. Am going to have it towed back to shop tomorrow morning as when I tried to drive it today only made it half way down my residentil street and I turned around and sputtered back home. The mechanic also tried to reset the the check engine light but couldn't get it turned off.
Any ideas?

I am having the same problem with my 91 volvo 940. The car sputters and has trouble climing hills but is pretty much ok once I'm up to speed on the highway. The mechanic told me there's oil leaking into my spark plugs and that's causing the misfiring and sputtering. I'll have to wait to Monday to have'm work on it so I'll see if that fixes it.

How long do the cooling fans stay on after car is shut down

The coolant fan temperature sensor detects the coolant is still hot, and keeps the fans on. And remains on until engine cools down. Check the coolant when cold for proper coolant level. If fans stay on all the time, check the coolant fan relay. Good-Day! . It will happen more in warm weather than in the cooler months.

Lifter noise

Wrong oil. Check the engine temp and thermo. Make sure oil is compatible with service. eg. your driving style and the weather. Castrol is pretty good oil. I used it in air cooled motocycle engine to solve shifting problem in hot weather. All lifters do not get the same cooling. That one is prob running a bit warm. good luck with that.

Hard starting in cold weather, turns over but does not start easily. Starts fine in warmer weather

check if the car have the thermostat in the cooling system, because in cold weather the thermostat close the water flow in the cooling system (radiator, head of the motor) and the car gets temperature faster to warm the engine to operational temperature.

Could be low fuel pressure due to a faulty pump or dirty fuel filter.

I started my car this morning and it was idling rough. Then the check engine light came on and while I was starting to drive to work it was shifting quick and hard into and out of gears. Eventually it...

yes some times when initial cold start a sensor could get a mis read due to alot of variables, and it would cause trans to shift abrupt. the good thing is it did correct itself and the computer reconized this and detects no stored code. recommend to let vehicle warm 5-10 min before drive. In cold weather you should never just jump in and start car and take off. should always let engine and fluids get to operating temps before drive, This will prolong the life of the motor and trans from internal (expensive) repairs.
