2006 Kia Sputtering When Driving (Problem with Fuel Delivery??)

Seems to be no issue with transmission, but with fuel delivery. Will be driving along and all of a sudden the engine sputters, like it is not getting fuel. Does best when cold. And stop and go traffic is a nightmare. Yes, the check engine light is on, and flashes at times. But will go for miles on highway with no problem then, sputter, sputter, making me very wary to drive, but a person has to get to work. But money is so tight, I just can't spend $100's to have it hooked to a machine at the dealer to diagnose and then $100's more if it is like a fuel filter. I have been told the fuel filter and unit is in the gas tank, is this true? Please help, it was 8 degrees driving home tonight and I am so scared I am going to be left beside the road. Thanks!

same issue - stumbles during idle, hot or cold, stumbles when accelerating or crusing - no check engine light - dealer trying to figure out now

I have a 2001 kia sportage and it has been doing the same thing for the past year and a half now. Its fine on the express way, but i am terrified of coming to a complete stop at a red light, it usually shakes like crazy and acts like im out of gas. I spent a couple hundred dollars on 2 tow trucks and a diagnostic computer check - they couldnt find anything specific, of course. The dealerships best guess was my fuel tank was flaking away on the inside, contaminating the gas (i had already had the fuel lines changed and a new filter put it, it didnt help), but the only way to look in the tank is to destroy it - and its $1000 dollars to replace because all the sensors are built in. So - I decided to try different additives, and what seems to work best is STP Dry gas, added to every tank! As soon as i dont put that in, the car starts shaking and stalling again...... it sounds stupid, but atleast now it only does it once or twice a month instead of every day!

I have the same problem. My 2006 Kia Spectra drives fine then all of a sudden it jerks and it won't accelerate. When I took it to the dealer he found nothing wrong and said maybe it was a bad tank of gas. Two weeks later, car still jerks now and then and but now my check engine light is on. I hope what is wrong is covered under warrenty!

Update since posting this problem back in December:

Dealer could not figure it out and problem just 'went away'. Drove fine until last night - then same symptoms: stumbling, dying at stop or when start to accelerate. Mine is still under warranty and have free roadside assistance, so I was able to get home - called the service and had it towed to dealer. I called Kia - got a case no. Dealer is supposed to work with Kia to try to figure out. Not getting a Check Eng light though - so pretty sure they will be lost once again.

One interesting note: I am pretty sure this problem reappears (4th time in past year) only after I have filled up the tank. I only go to Shell or Exxon - and put in higher octane, thinking it was a fuel issue as others have commented. Not this time - but wondering if it could have something to do with too much gas in the tank? Blocking a vent or something???

Got car back from dealer. They could not diagnose but Kia tech support told them to check the fuel vapor cannister for fuel and sure enough had some fuel inside (should only be vapor going) into this canister) which indicated a bad purge control valve and/or canister close valve. So they replaced everyhting associated witht his fuel vapor recovery system (i think that's the correct term) and running good....so far. Fortunately this was under warranty but sure it would be quite an expensivve repair.

2000 Nissan fuel pump relay trouble shooting

This goes for any car that doesn't start. Take a rag, soak it in gasoline, then hold the gas soaked rag over the air intake, then have someone crank the ignition. If it is a fuel delivery problem the engine should start briefly or at least sputter. If it does that then you know there is a fuel delivery problem. If the same symptoms persist then you know that there is some other issue than fuel delivery.

Kia sportage 2007 sputters when I drive jerks and this am as I tried to speed up it didn't seem to want to shift up just reving ??!! I changed allready pump belts and do many other parts what could it be ?...

sputters in the context if engine, means MISFIRING, is it?

for a transmission, they dont sputter. sorry

but can jerk, or snatch, (being caused by gears engaging way to late)

(aka, harsh shifting) the opposite of slip

but it can slip then engage, causes a jerk. or harsh shifting.

see?

they do 100 things wrong, mostly never to sputter.

they don\'t shift up or down

they slip. (bad tranny)

if engine sputters, its tune up time, (posted like 10,000 times here)

if the transmission has issues, have real mech test it and tell you

all the symptoms, and possible ideas.

why not?

the A/T is a very very complex electro /mechanical device.

sputter is a word best for engines. like chain saw with a bad spark plug it sputters along and stalls.

does your car stall?

What could cause the car to stutter when under load going up hill.

It sounds to me like a passing gear issue. Or even and Over Drive issue. Try this to find out. When you put the car in gear, instead of O/D, try regular drive. If you have a push button O/D then deactivate it. If you only have Drive, then try shifting into 3. Run the car up to the same speeds you were having problems with. If you don't have the issues with the higher RPM's then it is an Overdrive/Highway gear issue. If it still stutters, then it could be a fuel delivery issue. Good luck.

If you feel that before getting the fuel car was fine, and something has suddenly happened after re- fueling the car, it may be due to the contaminated fuel or the clogged fuel filter.

How can I diagnose a fuel delivery problem on a 2003 VW Jetta GLI 2.8L

you can unhook the fuel line where it connects to the fuel rail and turn the key on and see if you get fuel but it's risky you don't want it to spill over the engine. you may just need a new filter or maybe an intermittent short at the fuel pump. could even just be the power supply plug for the fuel pump

Are you certain you have oil in the vehicle?

Things to check.
Ground connections under the hood (should be 3 1 on the chassis, 1 on the engine and 1 on the transmission).
Engine oil
Transmission oil
Spark plugs

Also have a shop test your fuel pressure, that will tell you if there is an issue with your fuel delivery system.

Could be the plug wires or the igntion coil overheating and shorting. The tempatures rise very high when the engine is worked hard causeing the insulation on older wires to leak current and short-out, idleing lets either to cool enough to recover. Same is true for the coil.

first you have to check for code with scanner , sounds like you have sensor problem , (coolant temp sensor map sensor etc). it could be a fuel delivery issue like lean condition . but the code for engine light will guide you in right direction. good luck
