Question about 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Car shuts off at red lights

The first experience with this problem was that I stopped at a red light and the car completely shut down. Lights and all. It would not restart for a minute or two and then started right up. Later, after parking it and going into a store, the car wouldn't start at all. No lights would come on or anything. After a few minutes, it would start up and run fine. Today the car started fine first thing this morning, but after shutting it down for a few minutes while I was in the store, it wouldn't crank up and it also shut down at several red lights....I'm thinking i should get my altenator checked first but i'm not sure why that would cause the car to not start when it's cold starting. Maybe it's draining the battery and the battery recharged after a few minutes. Your help is much appreciated.

It had only been running for maybe 10 minutes. We don't travel very far at one time because we live in town. I didn't notice a check engine light. Right before it stalls the lights get dim and the car slowly just dies out. Then for a few minutes no lights or anything will come on. It acts like a power issue of some sort to me.

I went to a local auto parts store to get the alternator checked. The dude checked the battery first and it was shot. He said that a battery could cause the problems i was having if it wasn't accepting the charge from the alternator. I put a new battery in and we'll see if it works. I'll let you know. thanks

It doesnt sound like a battery or alternator problem at all.Was it running warm?or did you have any check engine light come before it stalled? It sounds like an ignition or a fuel problem.Let me know

At least a few times a month I start my car and go to put it in reverse or drive and the car shut off completely. Now the other day it would not start as if the battery was dead but the battery was fine. Few hours later it started and has been fine what is going on with this car. I tell everyone I have a ghost living in it.

On my 2005 F/expdn, if I am on red light stop, when rpm goes under 50 x 1000 my car shutdown. If I keep it above 50 by pressing accelrator is OK, pl suggest

1st your car should not idle below 110 rpm even in gear

idle problems on these are caused by both broken or open vac ports or a dirty throttle body the A/F ratio cant get a correct reading

Have to put your pedal to the floor to have a 1996 cavalier even somewhat fire

Hello, check your oil level. They have a safety switch that shuts something down( sorry for the lack of vocabulary.) I did manage to start the car, and drive it home, and fill the oil. (about 5 miles). I had to hold both the gas, and the break so I could keep the engine idled high enough to keep it from dying at red lights, and or stop signs. That's my unfortunate experience/ attained knowledge. I hope this helps.

Chevy cavalier 2002 shut off while driving, power steering went out and brakes. i turned car off and it restarted what was it and how can i fix it?

Ther is a problem with some computers in that they shut down the engine for no apparent reason. This problem hounded Kia owners as the engine just stopped at lights but restarted with no problems. Check for any fault codes and check for circuit problems with alternator as some cpu's get their power directly from the alternator and it has to be full voltage or they sense a power failure and shut down.

Keyless remote wont work, vehicle completely shut down

Hi Russell,

Absolutely no power? No dome light? No head lights? Nothing?
When you step on the brake pedal, no brake lights?

If true, start at the source and pop the hood.

This is going to be a bit of back and forth dialogue. I'll ask some questions and you get me the answers. That way we can get to the root of the problem. To save time, I'll ask multiple questions at a time. Here goes.

  • Check the battery. Is it still there? (Valid question with no evidence of power)
  • Are the terminal clamps tight?
  • Are the terminals clean and free of corrosion?
  • Are all the belts in place and tight? (pay special attention to alternator)
  • If you have a voltmeter. test the voltage at the battery terminals. It should be +12.5VDC.
Try getting a jump, when the cables are attached does anything light up?
Does it turn over and start?
Does it do anything?

Comment me back with your findings

Your computer has too many sensors for your car, and the computer shut down. You need to get a computer diagnostics done on your car to see if the computer is still good. That is gonna cost you about 65 bucks to do it.
