no i have not done that yet, i plan to do it tomorrow before work, it just started late last night. the mass air sensor, what does it actually do? am i able to do it myself if that is the problem.? i know alot of times when you have autozone run the reader on the truck some things dont show up, is that one that will show up or does it have to be sputtering at that moment to show up? because after you drive awhile it doesnt do it that much just every once in awhile. thanks!!

Have you ran trouble codes yet? Most auto stores have a reader you can use now a days. Problem sounds like fuel overload at lower rpm and can be caused by bad throttle position sensor or mass air sensor.

I wouldn't think it to be a fuel delivery problem anymore. If you could get someone to scan it while the problem occurs maybe you could see if your TPS is dropping out due to a faulty sensor or connector, also you could check for a blocked cat convertor by hooking up a vacuum gauge to the engine or a pressure gauge to the exhaust at 1500rpms should be no more than 1 to 1 1/2 pounds back pressure. Also you could check your magnetic pole piece that is under the rotor in your distributor they are known for the magnet cracking at the rivets.

SOURCE: My 1999 GMC Sonoma(manual transmission) sputters

Change fuel filter, plugs and wires.
Check for any vacuum hose leaks.
Check gas cap to make sure seal is not broken
Check fuel pressure and spark to all cylinders.

If check/service engine light is on, have an engine diagnostic test done to pinpoint exact problem.

Check TPS for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

Engine sputters when accelerating

The flashing light means the problem is serious enough to cause damage to the catalytic converter. Have the computer scanned for trouble codes to proceed. And get the plugs replaced.

Engine sputters and sometimes dies.

As for the engine, try replacing the fuel pressure regulator. If it accelerates good but when you decelerate it dies, it's the FPR.

Why does my 1998 sebring idle fine but sputter badly under load.

Does it use spark plug wires or individual ignition coils for the each plug?. My 98 intrepid uses coils and occasionally I have to change them out cause it would start to miss when normal temperature was achieved. If it uses wires, try replacing them, along with the spark plugs.
