Very high idles and drops into gear roughly

My 1987 RAM D150 will frequently idle very high after stopping and being shifted to park. Then when shifting back to drive or reverse will "fall" into gear very violently. Suggestions?

I got a 90 D150 did the same thing. the dealer calls it a throttle kicker solenoid. basically an iac motor. if your looking at the motor its to the right of the throttle body. Unplug it and take it off. if your idle drops down there's your problem. the part number on my 90's was 04288256 but it costs like 236 bucks cause its a vintage part. its so hard to find used parts for these trucks. Good luck hope this helped. I'm 90 percent sure that's going to be your problem.

the other reason why your truck is idling high is your step down on your carb linkage is sticking or the vacuum on the choke (drivers side) is sticking. i bet when you pump the gas a couple times it idles normal again right?

Have you checked for a broken valve spring. Repaired a dodge engine with the same running issue as you have described and it was a broken intake valve spring.

Well, the computer is supposed to open the IAC to keep the RPM above 600 or so depending on the load on the engine.
If you have voltage and ground for the IAC it should raise idle speed to at least 1100 when you first start the engine cold.
If that is not happening, I would look for carbon build up in the throttle body. You can apply voltage to the IAC and open it to see if the air passage is open too.

High idle and rough idle.

Sounds like a serious vacuum leak to me. Can you hear any air rushing under the hood when it's idling? Wiggle all your hoses around while its running and listen for a hiss. If it was a sensor his scanner should have picked it up, and if the fuel pump was no good, it wouldn't run at all. Aim a timing light at the crank mark. If it's jumping back and forth, your timing chain has jumped.
