Question about 2002 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

Turn signals sometimes don't work

My 2002 Malibu turn signals have acted up lately. They work most of times, but sometimes just stop working, no lights or clicking sound. When they don't work, other electrical systems appear to work just fine. A day or even a few hours later, the signals work again. Any solutions and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot. How do I change the flasher? Is it a DIY job or a job for a professional? Your guidance is greatly appreciated. Jim

Can't seem to find the part online at Autozone.com. What is the right part name for this flasher? Thanks a lot!

Sorry for the delay in rating your solution, but I did not have the car to get it fixed; it was used by my kid in college. I will try to fix it during this holiday period when the kid and the car are home.

GM actually issued a special policy # 04098 that covers free replacement
of the hazard switch/turn signal flasher, which is located behind the
hazard flashing button, for all 1999, 2000 and 2002 Alero, Grand AM and
Malibu for update 10 years or 150,000 miles whichever occurs first. I
just got my 2002 Malibu fixed by a locate Chevy dealer. I first called
the Chevy Customer Care Center at 800-630-2438 to inquire about this
special policy. After getting the relevant info from me about my car
problem, the rep called this dealer and explained to them the
situation. The dealer then set up an appointment with me to replace the hazard switch/flasher free of charge.

I had the same problem. That was fixed by the dealer few months ago free. Threee weeks later, I have started getting clicking sounds while I drive. It is not continuous. I took the car back to the dealer. He said that it is the multi-function switch and is not covered by 04098. It costs $459. Is turn signal switch different than multi-function switch? The clicking sound wasn't there first time.

My 2002 malibu turn signal and brake lights just stopped working. checked all fuses and all are intact..

We, too, have an issue with our turn signal on our 2002 Malibu. I thought it was the fuse, but that's fine. Thanks for the Chevy info. I'm going to call them tomorrow and find out about getting it fixed via that policy #.

Change the flasher to an electronic unit. They are far less likely to give you trouble.

No it is easy. turn on the signal switch and listen for the clicking. Home in on the sound. Most flashers are in the fuse box area or under the cars steering column. You may need to take the kick panel off under the steering column to get at it,but all it takes is a screwdriver. When you find the flasher it simply unplugs from the connector and the new one plugs in.

Here is an example, Yours may be different. Call your local parts store and ask for an "electronic heavy duty turn signal flasher".They will know what you mean.

My dashboard light isn't working but my turn signal light, emergency break light and all other warning lights work, just not the backlight so I can see the speed i am travelling in the dark.

Did you try turning the wheel/knob next to the head light switch? It's the dimmer for your interior lights. Sometimes that happens and some ppl don't know about it. Not sure how familiar you are with it so thought I'd throw that out there.

2002 Chevy Malibu. ABS light

The abs light will reset every time the vehicle is shut off. The most common cause of the abs light coming on is a bad wheel speed sensor. A scan tool would be the option to locate the fault in the abs system.

2001 Malibu - turn signal & horn problems

Google Service Bulletin No. 04098A. There is a recall for the hazard switch. My car's vin is not within the range, but I have the blinker problem. I was told by the Chev. 800 number that if a dealer determines that is the problem they will replace it. You can also buy the switch for about $20 and replace it yourself if you don't want to have to deal with a service dept.
