Its a very common problem, its a part of the heater system called the blend door and its located inside the dash, the ticking noise is cause by the blend door motor constantly slipping on the blend door gear. these are made of plastic hence why they break. BUT there is an american (lhd vehicles) site called heater treater and i am working with these guys and trying to get a blend door made up for rhd models. heatertreater makes theres out of metal, but it is still a painful job to replace them, taking between 4-8 hours. BUT apparently the blend door is accessible from the foot well, for more info go to the website above, they are very helpful. hope this helps.

It is called a blend door acuator problem. it is what moves the door from hot to cold or vice versa. it is usually way up under the dash and is very hard to get to.usually requires dash disassemly. do yourself a favor and take it to a mechanic. it will save you $$$ in the long run.

2003 ford explorer xlt 4.0 ,2 wd is making an air release purging type noise when shuting off the car. it lasts only 5 seconds or so. can any one help

it could be the pressure in the air conditioning system equalizing through the orfice tube. Usually if it's this the noise is most noticable inside the car, probably from the vents. The A/C will run when the defroster is on even if you don't have the A/C on.
