Question about 1990 Acura Integra Hatchback

Belt replacement there are three belts on the crankshaft pulley and the outside one doesn`t seem to have a way to loosen tension,It seems fixed solidly to the engine.It goes to the power steering pump.Does this belt have a trick? It`s the 1990 acura integra ls 4 cyl. O.H.C. engine

Hi gerberwa,
My mistake on your other request. When you mentioned tensioners, I assumed serpentine.

For this, I need clarification on something.

Look at the power steering pump and pulley.

Are the mounting bolts behind the pulley? Like there is no way to get to them?

There should be several holes in the pulley. These are to get a socket through. Lining them up by hand is your best bet.

If the pulley is solid, let me know.

There should be an idler pully, one that doesn't drive anything mounted to a flat black bracket that is then bolted to your engine. That pulley has a 14 or 15 mm nut in the middle of the pulley. loosen it, but don't remove it. Behind the pulley on the bracket is a small bolt head. that will loosen the pulley shaft, allowing you to remove the belt. The bolt also may be on the underside, but it's there around that pulley on the bracket. Also be careful the bolt isn't seized, if it snapps you will have a very hard time getting the tension back on the new belt. You may want to spray it first when you find it. You may also need to remove another belt if there's one infront of it, like an a/c belt or alternator belt, loosening the alternator to remove the belt. It's very tight, and it may help to remove the wheel and plastic inner fender sheild, using a pair of needle nose pliers to gently remove the pop snaps.

INSPECTION

Inspect the belts for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately. It is always best to replace all drive belts at one time, as a preventive maintenance measure, during this service operation.


CHECKING TENSION AND ADJUSTMENT

See Figure 1
The belt tension on most driven components is adjusted by moving the component (alternator, power steering pump etc.) within the range of a slotted bracket. Some brackets (toothed) use a rack and pinion mechanism which moves the alternator side-to-side to adjust the belt tension. With this configuration, no prying tools are required. On Quantum (except 5 cylinder) and Fox models, the air conditioner compressor drive belts are adjusted by varying the number of discs (shims) between the halves of the crankshaft pulley. Before adjusting the belt tension on any engine, look at the mounting and determine what kind of bracket is used.
To check belt tension, push in on the drive belt about midway between the crankshaft pulley and the driven component. If the belt is less than 39.4 in. (1m) long, it should deflect between 0.80-0.120 in. (2-5mm). For longer belts, it should deflect between 0.40-0.060 in. (10-15mm). Belt size is usually printed on the back side of the belt. If it can't be read, it's probably time to replace it.

  1. Loosen the adjustment nut/bolt in the slotted bracket. Slightly loosen the pivot bolt.
  2. Pull (don't pry) the component outward to increase tension. Push inward to reduce tension. Tighten the adjusting nut/bolt and the pivot bolt.

  1. Components, such as the power steering pump and some air conditioner compressors, may be mounted with a double slotted adjusting bracket using a threaded bolt and locknut to adjust and maintain tension. Loosen the locknut(s) and slightly loosen the bolt(s) in the slotted groove(s). Turn the threaded adjustment bolt(s) in or out to gain correct tension. Tighten locknut(s) and slotted bracket bolt(s).
  2. Recheck the drive belt tension, readjust if necessary.

Toothed Brackets

  1. Loosen the tension bolt and the alternator pivot bolt. These bolts should be loosened until the alternator swings freely under its own weight.

  1. Adjust the V-belt by turning the nut on the tension bolt while checking the belt deflection with your thumb.
  2. Once the proper tension is achieved, tighten the tension bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). Tighten the pivot bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  3. Recheck the drive belt tension, readjust if necessary.

On Quantum (except 5 cylinder) and Fox models, the air conditioner compressor drive belts are adjusted by varying the number of discs (shims) between the halves of the crankshaft pulley.

  1. Remove the nuts/bolts securing the tensioner plate and crankshaft pulley halves.
  2. Add or remove the amount of spacer discs between the pulley halves until the belt tension is correct.

If there are any shims left over, do not throw them away. On Fox and turbo diesel Quantum models, store the extra shims in front of the split pulley (behind the tensioner plate). On Quantums with 4 cylinder gas engines, store the extra shims behind the split pulley (in front of the crankshaft hub).

  1. Secure the pulley halves. Torque the pulley nuts or bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

If a belt must be replaced, the driven unit must be loosened and moved to its extreme loosest position (usually by moving it toward the center of the motor). After removing the old belt, check the pulleys for dirt or built-up material which could affect belt contact. Carefully install the new belt, it may appear to be just a little too small to fit over the pulley flanges. Fit the belt over the largest pulley (usually the crankshaft pulley at the bottom center of the motor) first, then work on the smaller one(s). Gentle pressure in the direction of rotation is helpful. Some belts run around a third or idler pulley, which acts as an additional pivot in the belt's path. It may be possible to loosen the idler pulley as well as the main component, making your job much easier. Depending on which belt(s) you are changing, it may be necessary to loosen or remove other interfering belts to get at the one(s) you want. Some models have a front engine mount installed through the air conditioner compressor belt circle. Support the engine and remove the mount prior to belt removal and installation.
When buying replacement belts, remember that the fit is critical according to the length of the belt, the width of the belt, the depth of the belt and the angle or profile of the V shape (always match up old belt with new belt if possible). The belt shape should exactly match the shape of the pulley; belts that are not an exact match can cause noise, slippage and premature failure.
After the new belt is installed, adjust it for proper tension. This is sometimes a three or four-handed job; you may find an assistant helpful. Make sure that all the bolts you loosened are retightened and that any other loosened belts also have the correct tension. A new belt can be expected to stretch a bit after installation so be prepared to re-adjust your new belt.
After installing a new belt, run the engine for about 5 minutes and then recheck the belt tension.

Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the wheel on the passenger side of the vehicle using the drive ratchet and a socket. Remove the passenger side splash shield, using the drive ratchet and a 10mm socket. 2 Remove the accessory belt(s), using a wrench to loosen the tension. Unscrew the bolt from the crankshaft pulley, using the drive ratchet and a socket. Slide the crankshaft pulley and the timing belt guide washer directly behind it off the crankshaft.3 Remove all the 10mm bolts in the top and bottom timing belt covers. Remove the covers. The drive ratchet and a 10mm socket works well for this. 4 Push the crankshaft pulley on the crankshaft just enough to engage the keyway. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise until the timing mark on the top camshaft sprocket, which is marked with a line on the sprocket with a number 1 next to it, is lined up with the pointer straight up on top of the cover to the rear of the sprocket. Once the top mark is lined up, the crankshaft pulley's semi-circle mark should be lined up with the triangular pointer on the block. The marks on the crankshaft pulley should be straight up and the keyway should also be straight up. Remove the crankshaft pulley. 5 Loosen the tensioner bolt with a wrench, pull the tensioner to the left, away from the belt and loosely tighten the bolt to hold it in place. Remove the timing belt. 6 Install the timing belt counter-clockwise starting at the crankshaft pulley and move upward over the outside the water pump, on the inside the guide pulley and over the top of the camshaft, ending on the inside the tensioner. The main thing when installing a timing belt is to ensure the belt is as tight as possible opposite the tensioner. Get the belt tight between the crank sprocket and the cam sprocket so the tensioner can take out all the slack without moving the timing marks.7 Loosen the tensioner bolt and allow the tensioner to apply pressure to the belt. Use your hand to apply a slight pressure to the tensioner toward the belt and tighten the tensioner bolt. Check the belt tension to ensure it is not too tight or too loose. Check the timing marks again to ensure they still align. If the timing marks are not lined up, loosen the tensioner, move it back and repeat the last procedure over again until the belt is tensioned properly with no misalignment of the timing marks. 8 Install the crankshaft pulley temporarily and turn the pulley two complete revolutions, once again aligning the mark on the crankshaft pulley. Ensure the timing mark is still lined up perfectly on the camshaft sprocket. Reinstall the remaining parts in reverse order of removal

2003 dodge intrepid sxt 3.5 over heated replaced the thermostat and still over heats might be water pump where is it located and what is in volved in fixing this


The water pump is located in the front of the engine & is driven by the timing belt. So if you go in there you might as well replace the belt and tensioners if needed.
Drain the cooling system (turn the radiator drain 1 full turn only)
  1. Remove the upper radiator hose
  2. Remove the top radiator support
  3. Remove the two 10mm head bolts from either side of the radiator and gently pull the top of the radiator forward to gain a little more room
  4. Remove the four 10mm head bolts holding the cooling fan module to the radiator . Remove the four clip nuts and the cooling fan electrical connector and lift the fan module out of the vehicle
  5. Loosen and remove the drive belts and remove the three 13mm head bolts holding the alternator belt tensioner pulley to the timing cover
  6. Remove the three piece timing belt cover (the lowest piece can be accessed through the crankshaft pulley by turning the pulley and removing the bolts)
  7. turn the crankshaft pulley and line up the timing marks on top dead center
  8. Remove the timing belt tensioner two 13mm bolts and remove the tensioner (If the tensioner pulley wheel is made of plastic you will want to purchase a revised steel tensioner pulley) . Put the tensioner in a suitable vise to compress it and install a small allen wrench from the front to hold it in place (close the vise slowly to compress the tensioner)
  9. (If need be) Remove the plastic tensioner pulley (the 15mm head attaching bolt can be removed without removing the crankshaft pulley)
  10. The timing belt can easily be slipped under/around the crankshaft pulley by slightly bending it to the outside of the timing belt housing on the drivers side and working it with your hand through the crankshaft pulley . No excessive force is needed to do this and be sure to clean the area well prior to installing the new belt
  11. With the belt removed , remove and replace the water pump . Coat the gasket with a little RTV silicone and clean the gasket mating surface well
  12. Install the timing belt in the opposite direction as removed . Make sure that all the timing marks are lined up .
  13. Reinstall the timing belt tensioner

    Note: There are several different length bolts used, so pay attention to where they are removed from, they must be installed in the same placement.

I followed the serpinetine belt routing diagram for 1994 lincon mark VIII that was on the hood and double checked to make sure it was the right belt and the belt is coming forward off the pulleys.


Then it is too loose. Double check but I'm pretty sure your adjustment is on the Alternator bracket. You loosen the bottom bolt which allows it to picot on the bracket, then loosen the upper bracket bolt and pull it outward to tighten it, lock the bolts back down and it should resolve your problem. If you have a spring loaded assembly that applies tension and you have to release to get the belt on and off then you may need to replace that or your not getting the belt all the way on. If even one of those channels on that belt don't line up properly the belt will work itself off. If you have a frozen or damaged pulley it will do this as well.

4cyl 2000 honda accord engine stalls while idling, recently died and will only start for short periods... possible problems/solutions?


check for spark and fuel after it dies.

If there is spark but no fuel, then the fuel pump may be bad or a clogged fuel filter.

If there is fuel but not spark, then the ignition control module or the ignition coil could be bad.

Also, check that the timing belt is timing the engine correctly.

To Remove:



  1. Record anti-theft code for radio.
  2. Disconnect battery negative cable then positive cable.

  5. Remove front tire assembly.
  6. Remove splash shield.
  7. Remove power steering belt.
  8. Remove alternator and alternator bracket.
  9. Safely support engine under oil pan.

  11. Remove cylinder head cover.
  12. Remove upper cover.
  13. Remove dipstick and tube assembly.

  7. Install crankshaft pulley and bolt.
  8. Rotate crankshaft pulley counterclockwise several times to seat belt.
  9. Loosen adjusting nut 1 turn.
  10. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise 3 teeth on camshaft pulley.
  11. Tighten adjusting nut to 33 ft lb (44 Nm).

    of cylinder head.

  16. Loosen adjuster nut 1 turn and ensure that belt tensioner freely moves.
  17. Push tensioner up and tighten adjusting nut.

  19. Using a 6 X 100 mm bolt, scribe a mark 2.9 in (74 mm) from end.
  20. Insert bolt into maintenance hole and hole in balancer shaft.
  21. Install bolt up to scribed line.

  26. Reinstall crankshaft pulley.

  29. Remove bolt from timing belt adjuster arm.
    NOTE: Inspect rubber seal on lower cover and replace as necessary.

  30. Remove crankshaft pulley.
  31. Install lower cover.
  32. Install seal at adjusting nut.
    NOTE: Crankshaft pulley, bolt and washer must be cleaned prior to
    installation.

  33. Lubricate crankshaft pulley bolt between head and washer and bolt threads
    with clean engine oil.

  34. Install crankshaft pulley and tighten bolt using special tools to 181 ft
    lb (245 Nm)
    .
  35. Install dipstick/tube assembly.
  36. Install upper cover. Tighten bolts to 9 ft lb (12 Nm).
  37. Install cylinder head cover.
  38. Install alternator bracket and alternator.
  39. Install power steering pump belt and alternator belt.

  3. Drain engine coolant into an appropriate container and retighten radiator drain plug.
  4. Remove upper radiator hose.
  5. Remove fan clutch assembly bolts.
  6. Remove 5 cooling fan shroud bolts.
  7. Remove fan shroud and fan as an assembly.
  8. Loosen alternator mounting bolts and remove drive belt from pulley.
  9. Remove fan pulley.
  10. Remove 4 cooling fan assembly bolts.
  11. Remove cooling fan assembly.
  12. Remove 4 bolts and upper timing belt cover.
  13. Remove 2 lower bolts and lower timing belt cover.
  14. Loosen adjusting bolt and remove A/C belt.
  15. Remove alternator belt.
  16. Loosen power steering pump lock bolt and mounting bolt.

  19. Remove 5 bolts and remove damper.

  22. Pry tensioner away from timing belt and tighten lock bolt to relieve tension on the timing belt. NOTE: Mark the direction of timing belt rotation on the belt if it is being reused.
  23. Remove timing belt.

  1. Install timing belt with minimal slack from timing belt pulley to water pump and from water pump to camshaft pulley.
  2. Loosen tensioner lock bolt until tension is applied to timing belt. CAUTION
    Do not turn crankshaft counterclockwise.
  3. Turn crankshaft pulley 2 full turns clockwise and ensure timing marks are properly aligned.
  4. Tighten tensioner lock bolt to 33 ft lb (45 Nm).
  5. Apply a force of 21 lb to timing belt midway between idler pulley and camshaft pulley.
    • Deflection should measure 0.43-0.51 inch (11-13 mm)
    NOTE: if timing belt deflection is incorrect remove timing belt and install NEW tensioner spring.
  6. Install timing belt guide.
  7. Install crankshaft damper pulley.
  8. Install 5 crankshaft damper pulley bolts. Tighten bolts to 132 in lb (15 Nm).
  9. Install power steering pump drive belt.
  10. Adjust power steering pump drive belt tension and tighten lock bolt and mounting bolt.
  11. Install alternator drive belt.
  12. Install A/C drive belt.
  13. Install lower timing belt cover and bolts. Tighten bolts to 84 in lb (10 Nm).
  14. Install upper timing belt cover and bolts. Tighten bolts to 84 in lb (10 Nm).
  15. Install cooling fan assembly and 4 bolts. Tighten bolts to 27 ft lb (37 Nm).
  16. Install fan pulley.
  17. Install fan clutch and shroud as an assembly. Tighten bolts to 74 in lb (8 Nm).
  18. Tighten 4 cooling fan nuts to 16 ft lb (22 Nm).
  19. Adjust alternator belt tension and tighten alternator mounting bolts.
  20. Install upper radiator hose.
  21. Install fresh air duct.
  22. Connect battery negative cable.
  23. Refill/bleed cooling system.
DOHC To Remove:
  1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  2. Remove fresh air duct.
  3. Remove 5 cooling fan shroud bolts and 4 thermo-modulated fan nuts.
  4. Remove 4 thermo-modulated fan shroud fasteners.
  5. Remove generator drive belt.
  6. Remove fan pulley (located above crankshaft pulley).
  7. Remove 4 bolts and splash shield (located under front of vehicle).

  2. Align marks on camshaft pulleys with alignment marks on seal plate.
  3. Install timing belt. NOTE: No looseness should exist on the tension side and at the camshaft pulleys.
  4. Loosen tensioner lock bolt.
  5. Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions in direction of rotation and check that timing marks are still in alignment.
  6. Tighten timing belt tension lock bolt to 27-38 ft lb (32-52 Nm).
  7. Apply a force of 22 lbs to timing belt between camshaft sprockets.
    • Belt deflection should measure 0.30-0.33 in (7.5-8.5 mm)
    NOTE: Replace tensioner spring if timing belt deflection is excessive.

  8. Install lower timing belt cover.
  9. Install upper timing belt cover.
  10. Install power steering drive belt and adjust belt tension.
  11. Install fan pulley.
  12. Install generator drive belt and adjust belt tension.
  13. Install A/C drive belt and adjust belt tension.
  14. Install splash guard.
  15. Install fan and fan shroud.
  16. Install 4 fan bolts. Tighten to 24 ft lb (33 Nm).
  17. Install fan shroud mounting bolts.
  18. Install fresh air duct.
  19. Connect hose to resonance chamber.
  20. Connect battery negative cable.

3.5L Engine

Remove or disconnect the following:
  1. Negative battery cable
  • Engine coolant
  • Water pump pulley bolts
  • Alternator bolt, loosen only
  • Water pump pulley and drive belts
  • Crankshaft pulley
  • Timing belt cover(s)
  1. Turn the crankshaft until the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and cylinder head are aligned.
  2. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt and turn the tensioner counterclockwise as far as it will go. Tighten the adjusting bolt.
  3. Mark the timing belt with an arrow showing direction of rotation.
  4. Remove the timing belt.
  5. If defective, remove the timing belt tensioner.

To install:
  1. If necessary, install the timing belt tensioner.
  2. Attach the top of the tensioner spring on the engine coolant pump pin. Ensure the hook on the pin is facing down and the hook on the tensioner is facing away from the engine
  3. Rotate the timing belt tensioner to the extreme counterclockwise position. Temporarily lock the tensioner in place.
  4. Align the timing marks of the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
  5. Install the timing belt on the crankshaft sprocket, then onto the rear camshaft sprocket.
  6. Route the belt to the coolant pump pulley, the front camshaft sprocket and the timing belt tensioner.
  7. Apply force counterclockwise to the rear camshaft sprocket with tension on the tight side of the belt and check that timing marks are aligned.
  8. Loosen the tensioner bolt 1–2 turns and tighten the timing belt to a tension of 57–84 lbs. (260–380 N).
  9. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise.
  10. Readjust the sprocket timing marks and tighten the tensioner bolts.
  11. Install the timing belt covers.
  12. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten to 108–116 ft. lbs. (150–160 Nm).
  13. Install or connect the following:
    • Timing belt cover(s)
    • Crankshaft pulley
    • A/C compressor belt
    • Water pump pulley
    • V belt
    • Negative battery cable
    • Engine with coolant

I can't seem toget my belt around the alternator,aircondition,waterpump


You should have a tensioner pulley somewhere in the belt's path. It will be mounted to the engine but not connected to anything. You need to loosen it and swing it in towards the engine to install the belt. Once the belt is in place, pull the tensioner to the outside and tighten it, but leave some flex in the belt. If the pulley wobbles or whines, you'll need to replace it, too, or it will destroy the new belt.

NOTE: If the belt still won't go on with the tensioner released, the parts guy may have sold you the wrong belt.

I have a 99 mitsubishi diamante and i broke the power steering belt how do i put it back on


Looking at the front of the engine you should see, from left to right, the PS pump, a tensioner pulley, and the crank pulley.

Loosen the 14mm fixing bolt and the 14mm fixing nut on the tensioner pulley.
On the bottom there is a 14mm adjuster bolt, loosen it to slide the pulley downward. It helps to have a swivel socket to access this bolt.
The belt goes around the outside of all 3 pulleys.

The alternator belt will need to be loosened to get the PS belt on behind it.
Between the Crankshaft pulley and the ac compressor pulley you will see another adjuster. Simply loosen the 14mm nut on the center of the pulley, then loosen the 14mm adjuster bolt sticking out the bottom to slacken the belt enough to slip it off.

Use the same adjusters to tension the belts once installed, and tighten down all fixing nuts/fixing bolts.

Be advised: If you broke your PS belt, you should verify your pump and tensioner pulley are in good shape and spin freely, and were not the cause of belt failure before putting on a new belt!

TIMING BELT POINTS.


– Mark direction of rotation of toothed belt with coloured felt tip marker pen. – Turn crankshaft to TDC. Mark on toothed belt guard -A- must align with mark on V-belt pulley -B-. – Check position of camshaft pulleys. The larger hole in the locking plates -arrows- must face inwards. hinweis.gif Note If the larger hole in the locking plate is positioned to the outside on the toothed belt pulley, the crankshaft must be turned one revolution in direction of engine rotation. – Remove sealing plug -arrow- from left side of cylinder block. The TDC drilling in the crankshaft must be visible (or able to be felt) in the sealing plug hole. – Screw clamping bolt -3242- carefully into hole onto limit stop so that the crankshaft is secured against turning. – Remove central toothed belt guard. – Unscrew vibration damper. hinweis.gif Note The vibration damper is secured to the crankshaft with 8 bolts. – First remove bolt -1- from oil filter housing, then remove bolts -2- for toothed belt tensioning element cover. – Remove cover. hinweis.gif Note t The toothed belt tensioning element is oil dampened. It can therefore only be pushed back slowly. t Use locking pin -T40011- to lock tensioning element. – If necessary, align holes in housing and on tensioning element piston, before tensioning using long nose pliers or a thin wire. – Turn tensioning lever of toothed belt tensioning roller -1- in -direction of arrow- using hexagon key. – Secure tensioning element with locking pin -T40011- when the tensioning lever of the toothed belt tensioning element -2- has been pushed back so that the holes in the housing and the pistons align. – Seat the camshaft clamp -T40005- into the camshaft locking plates and loosen the securing bolts approx. 5 turns. – Remove camshaft clamp -T40005- again. – Now pull the camshaft pulleys off the tapers using two-arm puller -T40001- and legs -T40001/2-. – Loosen tensioning roller -arrow- and remove toothed belt.
