Question about 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

I own a 1999 VW polo. The oil pressure warning light illuminates

After about 20 secs from start-up even though there is sufficient oil and the pressure seems OK . At the same time that the problem arose the tachometer shows nil revs when engine running so i'm thinking it's an electrical problem for both problems to occur together, Any solutions please

I have the same problem on a 1999 (V-reg) VW Polo. On ignition I need to immediately blip the rev counter to +1000 as this prevents the oil pressure alarm from sounding. In my case it seems to be an over-sensitive sensor rather than an oil pressure problem.

I own a 97 Jetta diesel. The tach and oil pressure guage went goofy on me. The alternator had apparently quit alternatin'. Replaced the alternator and now I have no tach or speedo. It ran fine anyway for a few days and now it won't start and the alarm kicks in after a few seconds of trying to start it.

It sound like a bearing issue. I would recommend checking oil pressure. This should be done both cold and hot. Allow engine to cool over night, you can get an inexpensive oil pressure tester at most parts stores. Remove the oil pressure sender near the oil filter. Attach the oil pressure tester to this port. Start and run engine. Cold oil pressure should ideally be around 40psi, with hot oil pressure around 20. If the pressure drops significantly or never really is satisfactory this may indicate a larger issue. It could have a bad or restricted oil filter. It could also have excessive clearance on the bearings, indicating wear and the need for new bearings.

1995 dodge V10 185000 miles. When you start it you don't have oil pressure and at an idle it won't go up. rev the engine 15 to 20 sec. oil pressure go up to 40 lbs. and stays there even at idle.

I would install a test mechanical gage on the engine (remove sender and install there) and see if the oil pressure really is low when it is started.

Why will car not start from key? Just turns over until battery drained, seems too sluggish to start

Has the fuel pressure been tested? Are you sure the ignition starter switch is ok and doesn't have an open that causes a stall out when the key is released. We do not have the diesel engine in this country so repair info is limited. You need to stop guessing and consult an expert, you have replaced parts that I would never replace for this kind of issue, a total waste of money and your time.

1987 Volkswagen Transporter campervan, petrol driven Oil pressure warning light and warning buzzer comes on after driving approx 17 miles even though temperature guage is in normal range;people reckon...

First make certain you have sufficient oil.
Then check coolant level.
If both are OK, you may have a goofy sensor. The one in the expansion tank is particularly prone to cracking and giving weird readings.

Check engine light came on, checked oil and it was fine. I was looking at my gauges, and the oil pressure seemed really off. It's normally around 20 at idle which is normal then its normally at 40 when...

it could be as simple as a bad oil pressure, or it could be a bad engine. If the oil pressure was good before the oil change maybe the oil filter might be the problem

Stop Engine, Low Oil Pressure message comes across message center when vehicle stops at a red light or stop sign for 30 secs or more

If you rev the engine does it go away? What is probably happening is that you have damaged or worn engine bearings. These bearings are designed so that there is a gap(clearance) between the crankshft and the bearing. This gives a space for the oil to pass through. If the clearance is too big the oil will pass through too quickly and the oilpump will not be able to build up pressure, even though the volume of oil pumped is sufficient.
When the oil is cold it is thick and the sensor sees the pressure as normal. As the engine oil heats up it gets thinner and that causes the pressure to drop. Also the lower the RPM the lower the pressure. I would suggest you get the oil pressure tested at a service centre ASAP. Also have them test the sensor although sensor failure is rare. Low oil pressure will not just go away and causes more damage the more you drive increasing your repair bill considerably.
I'd say you are already in for a cranshaft regrind and oversize bearings. Perhaps (if you're lucky) only just an oil pump although this is unlikely as bearings tend to fail before an oil pump does. I'd replace both at the same time since the engine has to come out for both these repairs. The cost of having the engine out a 2nd time far outweighs the saving on spares when doing both the first time.

Oil Light comes on VW passat

Start checking the oil level, if oil is low then the problem is a leak or weared rings.

If oil level is ok, check that the oil pump has enough pressure.

If oil pump is also fine, then scan the ECU (car computer) and replace the sensor if you do not find anything else being wrong.
