Most probably it is in limp mode. If you have second gear and reverse it is a computer related problem. you need to check with scan tool and pull codes, If your unable to check codes then about the only thing you can do is guess at what is wrong. Make sure you have power to the transmission computer. Then with out diagnostic codes would be to replace computer. Todays vehicles have codes that are stored for troubleshooting and with out them it's just guessing.

Transmission shift points

it could be a variety of things...but it sounds like it could be a timing belt or a problem with your injectors. One of them could be mis-firing or have a short or just be blown out. I would also check into it being your valves. Try taking it to Auto Zone and let them check the code..they will do it for FREE.

The auto tranny is not shifting and is reving up way to high!

try shifting it manually from low,let rpms rise, then 2nd,let rpms rise, then to drive and see what happens. It could be bad drive clutches in the transmission but could be a sticky valve body in the transmission,if it does work by shifting manually add 1\2 pint of dot#3 brake fluid to the transmission fluid to assist in cleaning the pistons in the valve body and seals and to help lubricate parts and seals

I have a ford mustang 2001 that will not shift out of 2nd gear it will shift fine 1st and 2nd but not out of second gear

ok, you may not like this, but it happened to me on a 01 mustang i was working on in my shop. It came in with engine noise, and after solving the noise on testdrive i experienced the same thing. It ended up being the torque converter, which ofcourse is inside the bell housing. Once the new converter was installed and filled it solved the problem. Also look at the dipstick, in park running when warm, inspect the fluid. smell it. does it smell burnt? is the color a bright transparent red? or is it a dingy maroon? you may be able to do a transmission service (filter and gaskit) and be ok.
Good luck!
