Question about 1993 Geo Storm

1 Answer

Rpm's fluctuate when trying to idle and eventually dies

It does matter if it is cold or warm, it eventually dies. It started about a month ago. It is getting gas, but something is not right. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i had it checked and they say that the place where you stick the machine on to get the codes is broke. I long do you think that that will take to get it fixed so that they can run a diagnostic on it?

what does that fuse do, and why didn't they recommend that in the first place instead of beating around the bush and wanting me to pay 150.00 bucks more for trying to fix it.

And where is the ecm fuse?

where do you live, maybe you can fix my car, ha ha ha ha

Check for vacumn leaks, hoses, and intake. check idle air control valve for proper operation, if you have check engine light run codes by shorting diagnotic terminal and turn ignition to run. Should flash any codes in system.

I do this for a living and it is how they/we make a living. We just do our jobs, but I always tell my customers what to do to have their car fixed properly and do it themselves. Most people do not feel like they are able to do it themselves so they have me do it. I always am ready to help. The Goverment wants all old prior obd2 cars off the road, thats what the emissions laws are all about

your ecm fuse should be in the fuse panel inside your car, it has been a long time since I have even touched a geo. lol I had one anyway good luck if can help in anyway, feel free to ask.

I was thinking about your problem and another thing you might check is you idle air control, that would make your car do what your saying, of if the ecm doesn't have power it would work either. Many cars will not even run with out the ecm, your may be working partially and will not give code because it is bad? I hope this helps

1996 mercedes c280 dies when put in drive

Engine stalls or RPM fluctuates at idle up and down or dies near idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

Alrighty. I've asked this a few times before, I have more info now. CHEVY 350 K1500. 1993. Replaced intake gaskets, (bad oil leak) dropped a small amount of coolant in with oil while doing so. Changed oil...

how did you clean the gasket off of the head? if you used a sanding disc the grit will eat up the bearings. are you reading pressure with a mechanical gauge? you have replaced all bearings??

6 psi @ 1000 RPM
18 psi @ 2000 RPM
24 psi @ 4000 RPM
this is chevrolet specs on oil pressure in your truck so you are within the range.

describe your idle problem more and i will try and help you with that

4 cyl Engine starts and idles ok...give it throttle and it dies

I need to get a clear mental picture of what exactly is happening.

With this said, you stated that the car "runs fine" until warmed up.

Q: When you start the car when cold it idles fine?
Q: If you allow the car to idle until "fully" warmed does the car stall?
Q: As the car begins to warm up, Does the RPM fluctuate abnormally?
Q: Does the car Only stall when you press on the gas pedal or does it stall just sitting and idling in addition to pressing the gas pedal?
Q: If you can drive it while cold does the car stall during acceleration when warm or only at Stop Signs / Lights?
Q: If you wait 20min or so, can you start the car again?
Q: How many miles are on the car?

2002 Wrangler 4.0 idles too high in park.

normal for an engine to start at elevated rpm and then die back as it takes a few seconds for the ECM doing it's sensor checks and idle back to the correct idle speed
check the idle rpm with an external rpm counter as most in dash units are inaccurate at rpm lower than 1000
as for the temperature
If you have a climate control module, it uses a mixture of heater and ac to maintain the temperature that you have set
so check it for operation
