It could be a vapor lock but not likely. Since the introduction of fuel injection vapor lock has been eliminated.
You need to figure out if you are loosing fuel pressure or spark when it will not start back up. Could be a fuel pump relay or ignition module among other things. Even a problem with the vent for the gas tank.

HI, NOT ENOUGH INFO. BUT I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS LONG ENOUGH THAT I HAVE AN ANSWER TO YOUR PROBLEM FROM WHAT YOU ARE EXPLAINING IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR FUEL CUT-OFF SWITCH IS TRIPPED LOOK UNDER THE PASSANGER SIDE OF THE DASHBOARD ON THE UPPER SIDE OF THE PANEL THEIR IS A SWITCH THEIR WITH A RED BUTTON CHECK AND SEE IF IT IS IN THE UP POSITION IF IT IS PRESS DOWN TO TURN IT OFF IF IT IS ALREADY DOWN THEN YOU HAVE A PROBLEM ELSE WHERE THIS DEVICE IS THEIR IN THE EVENT OF A WRECK OR ROLL OVER SO THAT FUEL IS CUT OFF TO THE ENGINE TO REDUCE THE RISK OFF FIRE, SOMETIMES THIS WILL GO OFF OVER A HARD BUMP OR IF ITS GOING BAD YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE IN AN ACCIDENT TO CAUSE THIS CONDITION AFTER CHECKING THE BUTTON THEN TRY AND START THE VAN..
PS: IF THIS FAILS TO WORK CALLME 724-575-2821 JASON,AFFORDABLE AUTO SERVICE..

Easy Fix! I know exactly what ur talking about, had the same problem for ******* ever, and its not the fuel pump, trust me!!! and it will cost you absolutely nothing to fix! I don't know what the hell they're called exactly, but on the right side of your engine there's a black box, next to where you put the coolant in, with fuses in it. They look like one inch cubes and will say Ford right on top. One of them is for the fuel pump. Try switching it with one of the others, or just switching all of them around and ur car will fire up, but the one that's not working will cause something else not to work properly, but at least u'll now what the problem is. Than just do what I did: take one with you and go to a junk yard and pull out a bunch, they're the same on many ford vehicles, even the newer ones, like 2000, not just the explorer. Make sure its the same one, pull out a bunch, put em in ur pocket and leave without paying, nobody will notice anyways, but they're tricky to find at a parts store, surprisingly. When ur car is running beatiful again, come back to this post and tell me if I was right! God knows how many ours I spent in that car stranded, waiting for it to fire up. Sometimes it'd be 5 minutes, sometimes an hour, sometimes hours, even days. Never knew when it would or wouldn't. Thought is was the starter too! If it works, tell me!!!
