These vehicles have a lot of problems with ignition cylinders binding up. It needs to be replaced with an updated cylinder. If you tap on the key with a small hammer or something like it while turning the key you can get it to turn

For the least expensive solution to the ignition cylinder lock issue. The car 2004 Focus SVT. Over the last couple of weeks the key would not turn. After numerous attempts over 10-15 minutes I couyld usually get it to turn once. After following the removal and repair process above I found an easier fix. IF you can get the key to turn for the Ford Focus there are 3 screws holding the steering wheel column cover on. Unscrew them. I had to also do the panel just below the column to get access to the last screw on the column cover. Pry the column cover apart, mine would not fully seperate becuase of the controls on the left side. Turn the key to the on position, use a punch to push in the release for the cylinder. There are some great photos and step by step instructions on the web. Now I took mine to a local locksmith. He removed the bar in the cylinder reassembled it an handed it back to me. For $20 it was fixed. I reinstalled the cylinder, took care of the lower panel and column cover and it was done.

05 ford focus, key won't turn in the ignition, tried both sets of keys.

Try wiggling the key and tapping near the ignition and see.If the Key starts turning in the ignition. Also spray wd-40 in the ignition switch hole and let the wd-40 spray liquid remain in there for 30 minutes then see if you can turn the key in ignition.Try this wd-40 spray couple of times,if still the same problem then, the ignition has to be replaced. Also the keys are to be reprogrammed by the dealer.Without getting your car key reprogrammed they will not work with new ignition lock cylinder. This problem is very common in ford focus, many other users too have noticed this and are very disappointed with the ford service due to this problem.Click this link directly to see the same problem with other ford focus users;--- http://www.carcomplaints.com/Ford/Focus/2003/accessories-interior/key_wont_turn_in_the_ignition.shtml ----------------- Thank you.

Turn ignition to run not start, count to 5,turn off key. Repeat this three times. Try to start vehicle. If its starts you are done. If not you will need to repeat turn ignition on count to 5 then turn off, 3 more times On the fourth time leave key in the run position for 10 minutes. Then turn key off & start vehicle.

2000 ford focus, Key will not turn in the ignition, How can I remove the unit out if the key will not turn to the on? David

The same thing happened to a vehicle I was working on and I tried everything but it would not turn. The same year...same problem and This is what I did: I placed the ignition key in the ignition and I tapped it one time dead centre ( tap it with greater force if the first time it doesn't work). I wiggled the key as if to turn it on and off and finally released itself and with the key in it still I sprayed WD40 into the ignition then turned it off and on. It will do the same thing after but keep doing this and spray WD40 when the key is not in the slot. The person with the vehicle has not had to come back and I was to replace the ignition. Hope this works for you too. E-mail me if it does at justicelewcam@yahoo.ca CL

My theft light on my 1998 Lincoln Navigator is on and the car won't start.

Deactivating/activating the autolock feature...
Before following the procedure, make sure that the ignition is OFF and all vehicle doors and the liftgate window are closed.
You must complete steps 1-5 within 30 seconds or the procedure will have to be repeated. If the procedure needs to be repeated, you must wait 30 seconds.
1. Turn the ignition key to ON.
2. Press the power door unlock control three times.
3. Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF.
4. Press the power door unlock control three times.
5. Turn the ignition back to ON. The horn will chirp.
6. Press the unlock control, then press the lock control. The horn will
chirp once if autolock was deactivated or twice (one short and one long
chirp) if autolock was activated.
7. Turn the ignition to OFF. The horn will chirp once to confirm the
procedure is complete.

Also, if your vehicle is equipped with a coded-key anti-theft system. Only the correct key will be able to start your vehicle. If your keys are lost or stolen, you must take your vehicle to a Ford/Lincoln-Mercury dealership for re-programming.
Programming additional keys If you need additional keys electronically coded for your vehicle, spares can be purchased (a maximum of 16 keys can be programmed). To program a new key, perform the following procedure:
1. With the coded key in the ignition, turn the ignition from ON to OFF.
2. Within 15 seconds of turning ignition off, insert the new coded key
into the ignition and turn it from OFF to ON or START. If successful, the
THEFT indicator light will illuminate for two seconds. Repeat procedure
for all new keys.
If key coding fails, the THEFT indicator light will flash.
Coding failure can be caused by any of the following:
² The new key was not inserted into the ignition within 15 seconds.
² 16 keys have already been programmed.
² The new key does not have an electronic code.

Other details can find in the 1998-Lincoln-Navigator-Owners-Manual

Good luck (remember comment and rated this).

I lost the key & transmitter for my 2004 Envoy. Had a new key made at the GMC dealer. Worked great one time. Tried later and it seems the alarm set itself. Cannot get the alarm to disengage thus...

Ignition keys relearn takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself.
