When ever I get to about 40 mph the car hesitates and sputters unless I give it the accelerator a heavy push. I can hear that the exhaust on the driver's side has a hole in it just in front the upper catalitic converter going towards the engine. The check engine light is on but, because it's OBD I I can't get the codes. Some ppl say it's the ignition coils, some say its' the exhaust, I;ve been told a bunch of other things. I love this car. She has 229K+ miles and runs strong ( she just brought me from New Orleans to Phoenix - 1600 miles with no problem. I want to restore her but she is my everyday car. What do i fix first?
You have a 4.6 single overhead cam engine in your 93 tw as that is what mine has but as you were told it is probably the catalatic converters getting plugged up with that many miles miles on her it wouldnt be surprised and as far as as the how to read diagnostic codes Auto Zone sells a scanner to do that for around 300.00 I wasnt impressed with the scanner so i returned it and got my money back then went on E-Bay and bought a Snap-On 2500 series scanner and bought the cartridge for it and read all the codes it was giving it then proceeded to fix my 93 tc ...problem was not the same as your tho letting you knopw where i bought my scanner so maybe you can too ...FYI.... the ABS brakes have a seperate hook-up that a regular scanner wont read another reason i returned the auto Zone scanner , this older snap-on will read both sets of diagnostic and there is one more item that uses its own diagnostics and that is the A/C controller you will find all infomation on how to obtain any codes to help repair it ....Sorry this is so long but i belive this info will help a lot of people owning lincolns and grand marquies and Crown vics with ATC or EATC..

I had the same problem with mine. Its the Catalytic Converter. Trust me
SOURCE: 2000 lincoln ls cracked head???
Previous to 2000 Ford had a cylinder head gasket problem with some of the v6 engines failing at two cylinders at opposite corners of engine (don't know what engineyou have) They supposedly corrected that, but I'm not sure how well the correction worked. I doubt if the cylinder head is cracked but if some amount of compression is getting into cooling system it's possible that it may give you strange sensor readings. When testing, it's also possible that some air escaped and returned everything to "normal" ('till it builds up again).
At this point, I would get a second opinion on this. As well as a comprehensive computer scan, have someone do a radiator hydrocarbon test...that will reveal any compression in cooling system from gasket or any other source. (Don't mention that it was checked before, just say what originally happened so objective testing will be done.)
SOURCE: Engine sputter
i would say its a missfire probally a bad plug, wire ,cap ,rotor or a combination if your brave (ok maby a little crazy) put your hand on your distributer while the car is running did you get a shock you found the problem bad wires

this may be caused by the engine "coil-packs that send the spark to your plugs" While checking make sure that there is no oil leaking onto them. This seems to be a common problem among the LS's.. Hope this helps.
