The problem is the Main line switch. Replace the same problem will be solved hopefully hopefully. In main line switch there are 3 positions one for off, one for accessories and other for start. In case of your problem the contact which has to close in start position is not happenning. or the wire corresponding to this contact coming from the main line switch is cut.

2004 olds alero 3400 eng.turn on key and all warning lights and gauges come up,then all goes off after 3 seconds, starter will not work, can start by jumping across starter and runs fine and shifts fine

Check for power at the switch wire when someone turns the key to start. I would say there is a break in the circuit of the thin wire between the starter & the ignition switch

Turning ignition key there is silence....battery is ok as lights, radio come on strong. I keep trying, turning the key and moving gear shift et...and maybe it finally connects and engin fires and starts...

When this happens and the key is in the Ignition position, do the dash lights, etc come on? Could be the ignition switch is bad, and this is and easy way to tell. If the ignition is on and when we go to START, nothing happens, I would replace the starter/solenoid next.
