My gear shift release lcok is stuck. I have to try really hard to push it in, in order for it to work. A friend of mine fixed it himself, and it worked fine until I got home. Im not sure what I need to do. Im also having a problem with my ignition switch. I would put the key in, and it wont let me turn to the on position. This is the original key for this car. HELP ME!
The gear shift lock probably needs wd-40 squirted into the assy on the gear shift knob if that doesnt work you may need to take it off and spray it, on thekey not working, when you try to turn the key, move the steering wheel either way and see if the key will turn then, sometimes the wheel will be in a tight lock position
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

1. there is an emergency release button under the gear shift.
2. You can also try: turn key on (don't start), then push as hard as you can on brake pedal(literally try to push through floor), them push button on shifter and pull as hard as you can to neutral. Now try to start car after putting it in park.
Sometimes if you shift to another gear just as you shut off key it will lock where it is. Also if you have used the 4 wheel (lo or hi) and did not put car in neutral before changing out of 4 wheel it can lock up. My mother has done both of these things to my car. And the above suggestion (2) has worked great for me.
Are your brake lights working?
If not, replace the fuse. Still not working? Replace the brake light switch. (Your brake light switch also releases the lock for the gear shift).
If your brake lights are working, are you hearing a soft "click" at the gear shift when you depress the brake? If not, check the lock solenoid at the gear shift lever.
There is also a slight possibility that your park pin is jammed. If you're parked on a hill, it's likely. Have someone push the car back and forth as you try to take it out of park... JUST DON'T RUN THEM OVER. :)
Okay, you are correct, the key is stuck because of the shifter lock wont release, the most common reason is its stuck, you will need to remove the covering around shift to get to shifter lock release solenoid, there you will clean and lube it, you will need to move it by hand as you spray wd40 on the arms, you will see how it work by pressing the shift release and you will see to lever that gets pushed, it wont move because its stuck but you will see the levers move inside, hope this helps, good day.
Hello! It sounds as if your gear shift lock isn't working properly - it should release when you depress the brake pedal. You're not stuck, however. There is a small plastic piece to the side of the gear shift on the console - you can pry this piece up and off, revealing a hole underneath. Insert a screwdriver straight down and you will push on the manual gear shift release button - once you do that you will be able to move the gear shift. This can be caused by a few things - weak battery, or the release button is broken behind the brake pedal.
Are you pressing down on the brake padle when you are trying to get it out of park? If that don't work check the fuses & there may be a relay that's may be related to a safty divice to the stick shift. If you don't press the brake padle the stick shift will not release so if you leave the car running a child could not push in gear. The lock silinoid is at the gear console
u will need to check and make sure the brake lights work, the shifter is tied to the brake light switch, if the brake lights don't work or the brake pedal is not pushed a gear shifter lock out is engaged, this is a Federally mandated safety feature.
First of all, I need to know whether you will be working on a lift or on jack stands as this will determine if you will just drop the transmission or have to pull the entire engine and then pull the transmission.
Heres what you should do before getting started.
1. Get a Haynes manual from the local AutoZone or any autoparts store.
2. Get to know your local Dodge 5 star dealer phone number as it will be helpful on quick on the fly questions if you need to talk to a mechanic or need to order parts.
Once you answer my first question, then I will let you know where to start, the haynes manual will also be very helpful with pictures while you are working if you get stuck.
I got same problem when I first got the car (bought used), took me a day to find out one of the fuse blown caused the problem now I always have 10A fuse spare in my glove comparment, check all your fuses (I believe it's an Audio/Clock 10A fuse) will solve your, good luck ...
